From Mr. Woods:

Hello Tiger Band Family,
We did it!  BOA Austin Regional Finalists!  I'm so proud and pleased for the students, they're working really hard and I've really enjoyed all the productive rehearsals we've had the past 2 weeks or so. All the judges were in agreement that this contest was one of the hardest early season shows they've had to judge...everybody was just REALLY good.  I know the students are excited about being included in such amazing company.  Thank you to our chaperones and Pit/Band movers for getting all of our stuff there and back safely.  I'm really looking forward to adding Part 4 this week to present, at least in part, this Saturday at the Capitol City Marching Festival.
Thank you to all who helped out with MS Band Night on Friday, I think the 7th and 8th grade students from both campuses had a great time, and the HS students did a great job of welcoming and helping out their Band Buddy.
Please remember that appointments, etc. are best scheduled such that your student is able to attend all rehearsals as scheduled.  The Directors staff and techs can't help them get better if your student isn't there.  Students are required to make up rehearsal time missed (not class time), but that should not be considered a fall back to miss rehearsal when an alternative time could be scheduled.
Please do not substitute any of the required undergarment items, grey dri fit, show shirt, grey lycra shorts, long white or black socks, white or black shoes.  ALL students are expected to bring and wear these items for every performance as designated.  We had several students that didn't have grey lycra short or the correct show shirt (the lighter blue dri-fit is the student version of the show shirt).  This diminishes the look of professionalism, unity and pride that we all have for our Tiger Band program.
UIL academic eligibility check #1 is now upon us.  Students must have a 70 or above in on level classes and at least a 60 or above in Honors/AP courses as of Friday, 9/22.  Grades are due in Skyward on Tuesday evening.  Ineligibility will begin Friday, September 19 at 4:15pm.  If your student is ineligible, they must go home after school on Friday, they may not be with or travel with the band while ineligible, but they will still attend all scheduled rehearsals.  Decisions as to whether a performance spot will be available to them should the regain eligibility at the 9 weeks will be made by the Director Staff on an individual basis.
We have our 2nd contest of the season coming up this Saturday - Capital City Marching Festival held at Burger Center.  Performance time is 3:30pm. Please see the linked itinerary and performance schedules at the top of the newsletter.

President's Update

Hey Band!

Wow! What a great day yesterday! I am so proud of the hard work our students have put in, and it was amazing to have that validated with a spot in finals at BOA Austin! Thank you to all of the volunteers yesterday who made the crazy day possible!

I hope your students have had a restful day today. The crazy schedule continues!

  • Football Game - This Friday is an away game at Buda's Johnson HS. We have a few spots remaining for volunteers, including chaperoning.
  • Capital City Marching Festival - This Saturday is the Cap City Marching Festival at Burger Stadium. Please consider volunteering. We have 30 volunteers spots still open.
  • Spirit Store - The store will open tonight for one more time to order an extra show shirt or gray dri fit, as well as the gray spirit shirts again. The order will take 3-4 weeks from today for delivery so consider this when ordering. This opportunity is great for Grand Nationals. If your student only has one gray dri fit, consider ordering a second one because there is a good chance they will need to wear it two days on the trip with no easy way to wash. A separate email will be sent out when the store is open. The store will close WEDNESDAY, SEPT 27. NO LATE ORDERS will be accepted, and no extra shirts will be available for sale.

Make sure your students are staying on top of schoolwork, getting good sleep, and staying hydrated!

Go Tiger Band!

Percussion/ Pit Crew Update

Thank you to all the volunteers that showed up to assist with the Friday game performance and for our 1st BOA competition this year.  It was great to see so many of you supporting our students.  We learned a few new things from both Friday and Saturday’s competition so be aware that we will be modifying the Sing-up lists for Home games and competitions moving forward.

It will be extremely important that we have each person’s name listed in Sign-up (individually) so it is clear who will be on the field – supporting the Front Ensemble.  For props – we will create a new sign-up category so we can track those volunteers that will assist with props (especially for competition days).  The adult volunteers for props are extremely critical to assist with moving the props into “the ready” position for students to take on to the field, however, moving forward those assisting with props will not be entering the field – something we learned from this weekend’s activities.

Again – I can’t thank everyone enough for your support – it takes all of us to make these activities successful so the students and Directors remain focused on the performances.

Lastly, for those that have submitted interest in assisting in Indianapolis – I am working on reviewing all the information this week so we can finalize our list of volunteers to support Pit Crew / Prop and ensure we do not have any conflicts with travel.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me with any questions.

Thanks

Allison Muth

Volunteer Central

Our volunteers have been showing up BIG time: helping, leading, shepherding in a multitude of ways. Thank you, thank you to every one who sweated it out this weekend to support our kids! Let's keep up this great momentum, since we are just at the beginning of the competition season, and have many more exciting events ahead:

Cap City Marching Festival - Our next competition is this Saturday and we need many more helping hands with Pit Crew, Chaperones, and Color Guard Chaperones. We have also added a new role which is separate from the Pit Crew: Prop Pulling Crew. This competition will be much closer, at Burger Stadium, and hopefully a bit cooler. Fingers crossed! Please don't wait to sign up if you can help >> Marching Contest Volunteer Signup

Home Football Games/Concessions Stands - We have three more home games on the schedule and we will need a full house in both of our concessions stands. We ask that all band families commit to at least 3 concessions-related volunteer shifts to make our biggest fundraiser a success. This is a great time to plan ahead and choose which of the home games you will be working your shifts. Look for Concessions Stand - Game Night Operations and Remote Drink & Snack Stand in the sign-ups. Sign up here >>  Football Game Volunteer Signup

Tiger Band Sign-Up Landing Page - As always, you can find ALL of the volunteer needs and spots at this link >> 2023-2024 Tiger Band Volunteer Signup

Uniform Update - Help Needed

Great performance at BOA Austin. You make us all proud!

Away Game against Moe & Gene Johnson Friday Night, September 22nd: Students will be wearing their Formal Uniform. They will need their grey lycra bike shorts, grey dri-fit, long black socks, and black shoes.

Capital City Marching Contest on Saturday, September 30th: Students will wear Formal Uniform with white bibbers. They will need their grey lycra bike shorts, long whitesocks, white shoes, Grey dri-fit shirt under the bibbers AND their competition shirts to change into. It is advisable that the student keeps a gym bag of some sort to put all their items in. It also helps if they mark their initials in their clothes and shoes, markers in the uniform room if requested.

Sewing Group:  We are almost finished cutting the materials and we are getting ready to serge drops and inserts. Once they are completed we will then need people to help cut snap tape, cut velcro strips, sew buttons, as well as sew everything together. We hope to start sewing by Monday, October 2nd. We do need them done and fitted by October 13th.  Come join the fun to get these made.

If you have any further questions, please contact us at: uniforms@dsbandboosters.org.

Thank you,

Su Gibbs and Suzanne Gusella

GO TIGER BAND!

Chaperones Needed

Taking care of our 200 kids during contests is a big job and needs a big team! We would love to add a few parents to our group who are willing to spend the day with us. The job isn’t difficult and is mainly just meeting the needs of the kids that may come up that day. In return, you’ll get a front row seat for all of the band action, and you’ll get to know the best kids and parents you’ll ever meet. Join us!

Drop-off and Pick-up Procedures

Going forward, we ask that you follow the following procedures for drop off and pickup.

  •  Drop off for rehearsals – You may use the Driveway Loop to drop off your student, but do not stop or wait. Please pull as far forward (past the first entrance to the loading dock). Be cautious and aware that students will be pushing equipment onto the practice lot.
  • Pickup from any rehearsal or event (football games or contests) – Please park in the parking lot and have your student walk to your car. Do not pickup, stop, or wait in the Driveway Loop. Buses will need to use the Driveway Loop to drop off for events, and students need to use the ramps from the band lot into the Driveway Loop for moving equipment back to the band hall after rehearsals.
  • Drop off/Pickup for School – For before and after school at regular school start and end times (not a band rehearsal), refer to the drop off and pickup procedures that the school issues.
