From Mr. Woods:
Hello Tiger Band Family!

The first week of Summer Band ’21 went REALLY well! It was great to get the band back together again…haha.

Summer Band Week 2
This next week will be a tuff one, especially if your student isn’t taking care of themselves. The days will be long and hot, and the next morning will come quicker than they’re used to. Please make sure that your student continues to hydrate after they get home and goes to bed at a reasonable time. Plan on getting your student to the HS by 7:50am, so they have plenty of time to get their stuff in the locker and get out to the practice field before 8:00am. Tardy students, regardless of the reason, will run a lap with their section leader.

DCI Contest trip 8/4
On Wednesday, 8/4 the Tiger Band will take a trip to the Kelly Reeves Stadium in Round Rock, TX to watch the DCI Austin Celebration contest. Drum Corps International (DCI) is the governing body of the Drum and Bugle Corps youth activity. The performers in these groups are between 16 and 22 years of age, and travel the country through the summer with the season culminating in Indianapolis, IN at the Lucas Oil Stadium for the DCI World Championships. Modern Drum Corps is very similar to what we do in the Marching Band activity, without woodwinds and on a more complex and grander scale. This will be a great opportunity for the Tiger Band students to see live pageantry arts performances that relate directly to what we’re working to achieve in terms of excellence and artistry. This will also be an opportunity for the students and parent chaperones to practice loading school buses and traveling to and from an event. The return time listed on the summer band schedule is approximate, we will be asking the students to contact you when we reach Nutty Brown Rd so you have an idea of when you need to arrive to pick them up. Please make sure you have transportation planned for your student to get home from the HS…the Directors stay until every student has been picked up…and we’d like to get home at a reasonable hour, too. If you would like to pick your student up at the event, you MUST sign them out, in person, with the parent chaperone of your student’s bus. Only a parent or legal guardian may take a student from any band event.

Communication
The Band Staff and Band Boosters use multiple platforms to communicate with students and parents, with email, Remind and Facebook being the most often used. As you know, communication is a 2-way street, so I do ask that you are a proactive partner in this endeavor. One way to do that is to read all the content in these newsletters…yes, they can tend to be lengthy, but I assure you all the content is important and necessary. I often hear “I get so many emails I just don’t read them all”…I understand that but please make a concerted effort to read our newsletters and other band specific email communications. I will be perfectly honest, the best and fastest way to get in touch with me directly is email – I am not very diligent about checking my voicemail. If we need to talk directly, send me an email with your phone number and I’ll call you asap.

2021-22 Tiger Band and COVID
The Band Staff is sensitive to the continuing issues and obstacles that COVID can place on our day to day business of doing Band. While the DSISD can not require masks, if your student feels more comfortable wearing a mask at band events, that is perfectly acceptable. We understand that everyone has different situations at home that may require more caution and vaccination status can play a factor as can the looming threat of the Delta variant. We will continue to use bell covers in rehearsals. For competitive performances, we do not plan on using bell covers at this time, but this could change as safety protocols adjust. While students may wear a mask during performance/competition, we are not planning on providing these masks at this time. Performance masks must be all white in color. Should your student need one, I can give you information on sources for these specific kinds of masks. Please know that your student’s safety and the safety of all of our staff and volunteers is of utmost importance, and will be at the forefront of decision making throughout the marching season and the school year.

President’s Update
Howdy Tiger Band Families!

Thank you to all of the great parents that volunteered their time and energy to make the first week of summer band and Senior Lock-in a success! These events can’t happen without your support. This coming week we need 4 more volunteers each day to make sure meals are served quickly and help is available when needed so our performers can focus on what they’re learning. Please go to https://signup.com/go/iYiQXVp to sign up for a shift.

This Saturday, August 7, we will be cleaning out the football concession stands and moving equipment from storage over to the concession stands from 8am to noon. If you have a pickup truck to help move equipment please email Kevin Smith, concessions@dsbandboosters.org to let him know. Please sign up to help at https://signup.com/go/zknxerR .
Upperclassmen parents, if you didn’t order new band shoes for your performer please have them try on their shoes before Wednesday of this week! The order for informal uniforms is about to be placed, so please email uniforms@dsbandboosters.org if you need shoes so they can get that added to the order.

Finally, a reminder about drop off and pickup procedures. When you drop off your performers at the band hall please pull through the loop so they’re on the sidewalks quickly. When you come to pick them up, however, please park in a parking spot in the lot instead of sitting in the loop. We will have bus traffic, pit, and props all moving through during pickups and need the loop clear for them.

Uniform Update
BAND SHOE FITTING SESSIONS August 2nd and 3rd
We will be fitting all students for their band shoes August 2nd and 3rd starting at 8:30AM while the band is practicing outside.
We have a large assortment of sample sizes for the students to try on. Please have them wear socks!
Attention to all band parents/students who did not order shoes: Please have your students try their black and white shoes one more time this week to make sure they fit. Every student must have a black and a white pair of shoes for this season. We will be ordering all band shoes for both white and black on Friday, August 6th. If you are not sure of your student’s size the uniform team will be fitting shoes while the band practices, inside near the uniform room for the remainder of band camp this week. If you did not order at registration, do not worry, you can still order new shoes by this Friday, August 6th.
Uniform Volunteer Opportunities:
Fittings and adjustments – We finished the Seniors and Juniors fittings during our first week of camp! We will start fitting the Sophomore and Freshman class this week. We have 85 freshmen and sophomores that have NEVER been outfitted for uniforms. We need volunteers that can help with pulling/restocking from inventory, ironing hems and cuffs, fitting shakos and gauntlets for each student. We will get a Sign-up Genius site for this, but drop-in help is always appreciated. https://signup.com/go/upuBfCt..
Cubby Keepers – We have 14 out of the 16 parents needed for the wash and care of our uniforms during the year after each game or show. We need just 2 more people to complete our team. A Cubby Keeper is assigned a certain number of uniforms to take home each week (10-15 sets, with instructions for staining, washing, drying and hanging) and return to the band hall. This is a great way to help the band look its best!
Sewing/ironing group – Sewing is going to be a big part of the performance uniform for drops and stirrups on the white bibbers. If you are handy with a sewing machine or a serger we would love your help. If you are a wiz at ironing we can also use your help. Sewing days will be announced and all help is welcome.
THANK-Qs
We would like to thank Marlene Gusella, Bridgette Elliott, Marian Grant, Nareese Gibbs, Kimberly Fallon, Brycen Gibbs, Maddie Foster and everyone else who came by to help during Opportunity Day, Registration and Band Camp first week. Your help was greatly appreciated!
If you have any further questions or want to sign up now, please contact us at: uniforms@dsbandboosters.org.
Thank you,
Su Gibbs and Suzanne Gusella

Band Movers Update
Greetings!!

Welcome to the new year of marching season! The kids need your help to make this season awesome and you can do that by signing up to help move their equipment! My team consists of moving equipment to, during, and from games and competitions.

Drivers:

The band has 2 trailers that need to be brought to and from away games and competitions. They will each need a driver.
-1 trailer will require a class A CDL. If you have a CDL please let us know.
-1 trailer (non-CDL).

Both driver positions will require paperwork with the district so if you are interested, please reach out soon so we can get that started.

Movers:

Help with loading and unloading of the band trailers with the bands help. Help setup / tear-down pre-game and halftime as needed.

Pit Crew/Props Update
It was a pleasure to meet so many of the DSHS Band parents during registration and talk about the support needed during marching season for Pit Crew and Props. As a reminder we are looking for at least 12 – 15 adult volunteers during football games and 20 – 23 adult volunteers for marching contests. To volunteer for Pit Crew activities please utilize the Sign-Up link. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly with any questions at pitcrew@dsbandboosters.org.

Thanks,
Allison B. Muth
