From Mr. Woods:

Hello Tiger Band Family,

Congratulations to the Tiger Football team on a hard fought win against Judson yesterday.  And a BIG thank you to all the students and parent volunteers who attended the game.  The support of the team by the Tiger Band is an important aspect of our program's responsibilities, and all students are expected to participate as indicated in the calendar dates sent out in July.  While I do understand that this is a time for visiting with family, making time to fulfill the Tiger Band Family expectations is appreciated.

HEB Gift Cards Fundraiser Info

Hey Tiger Band! The holidays are fast approaching and they make great gifts! Let’s talk H-E-B cards for a minute!

Each month we have families contributing to Tiger Band just by grocery shopping and filling their gas tanks. If you haven’t signed up, please consider doing so and here’s some math for you to think about .

For us, the family tries to purchase $500 in cards each month. After a few grocery runs and tanks of gas, the amount gets used pretty quickly. That means, at our current discount rate honored by H-E-B, we’ve generated $15 back to the band that month, or $180 each year. We are just 1 of 160 or so families and you can do the math. And if the band were to increase our total monthly order amount to pre-COVID numbers, our discount rate increases as well generating even more for the band. All because I’ve setup a monthly bill pay at my bank using the DSBB PO Box 1522, DS 78620 address and just do my usual shopping.

Thank you for still reading and supporting the Tiger Band!

Laurie Darilek and Jennifer LaRochelle

HEB.cards@gmail.com

To those of you still needing to get started with this fundraiser:

Please take the plunge and get your orders in by the 10th of the month so you can start getting your gift cards and the band can receive increased $$ benefits.

From Mr. Woods:

Hello Tiger Band Family,

Another great week of Summer Band has passed, and we're down to the final stretch.  The progress in all sections is really impressive, and that comes down to the student's focus and effort.  Thanks to all the amazing parent volunteers that are helping out with the water cow, shade tents, medical bag, etc. Emily Falls is doing a great job of heading up getting the shade tents and water cow set up every morning.  Tanya Conreaux and Tara Ballard and their snack/lunch crew have done another exceptional job of keeping 200 kids fed and happy throughout the day.

I hope you enjoyed our Tiger Band Social at Epic Fun on Friday night.  The management and employees all made a conscious effort to find me and Kimberly Bertram (thanks for setting this up for us, Kimberly!) as we were leaving to tell us how awesome our students were - cleaning up after themselves and being very polite with the staff.  They made a point to emphasize that they don't experience that very often from other groups.  This bodes well for our travel opportunities this fall, and the expectation from me is that this behavior continue to be an integral part of the Tiger Band culture.

Rehearsal Schedule for this week:

Monday 7:00am - 11:00am

Tuesday 7:00am - 11:00am

Wednesday 7:00am - 11:00am

Thursday 7:00am - 11:00am

Friday 7:00am - 11:00am

TMEA Region Band Etude Masterclasses: These masterclasses are required for all Wind Ensemble students, and anyone else interested in auditioning for Region Band are welcome. Schedule at link below.

TMEA Region Masterclasses

Colorguard Sectionals: Colorguard will NOT rehearse on Monday mornings, but will have a sectional on Tuesday afternoons. See Weekly Rehearsal Schedule in Newsletter for more details. The first occurence will be August 15th/4:30-6:00pm

BOA Grand Nationals trip to Indianapolis: The deadline to register for this trip is fast approaching.  All students and any parents going on the trip must be signed up by August 9th.  If you've already signed up, that's great!  Please be sure to keep up with your payment schedule through the TMF payment portal.  These are NOT automatic payments, you will have to go to the portal and pay each time.  It is possible to pay more than what is due, but if you get more than 2 payments behind TMF will drop your account from the trip.  You can get reinstated without another deposit fee, but will have the pay the balance due at the time of reregistration.  Any questions, please contact keith@tmftoursandtravel.com

Required Parent Meeting: 6:30pm in the DSHS Auditorium.  Please join Mr. Woods and Caryn Pacelli, Band Booster President, for a required parent meeting prior to the Tiger Band Preview.  This is an opportunity to talk through details of the Indianapolis trip, needs for parent support throughout the season at football games, contests, performances, fundraisers, etc.

Dropping off and Picking up your student at the HS

When dropping off or picking up your student, please follow the rules below. Before and after rehearsals or events, it is important that the driveway loop and the loading dock stay clear so that students can safely get set up and torn down with their equipment.

DO pull as far around the loop as you can

DO park in C lot to wait for your student

Do NOT pull into the loading dock area

Do NOT block the loading dock or staff parking entrances

Do NOT wait, sit or park in the driveway loop.  Our school buses and charter buses must be able to safely stage for student loading and unloading in that area

Tips for safe and enjoyable rehearsals:

- Eat breakfast everyday - stay away from Dairy products

- WEAR A HAT - even if you "don't like hats"

- Get outside for more than 15 minutes at a time before rehearsals start to acclimate to the heat!

- Hydrate before rehearsals begin, and make sure you bring your water jug with Tiger Band Koozie filled with water (not sports drinks or tea).  We will have the Water Cow available for refills, but start the day with a full, fresh, water jug.

- Apply sunscreen liberally!

- No jeans or jean shorts.  Athletic wear and tennis shoes with good support are expected.  No Hi Tops or boots permitted.

Tardy to or Absence from regularly scheduled rehearsals/events is sometimes unavoidable.  Students will make up the time missed, regardless of the reason.  Parent communication to Mr. Woods via email in addition to student communication with their section leader is required prior to the absence.  This is especially important for morning rehearsals - I need to be able to confirm that your student is safe and where they're expected to be.

First Annual DS Band March-a-thon! August 26!

Our first annual March-a-thon is coming up!!!  Although parents are paying their student fees individually, this fundraiser is critically important to pay the remaining cost of getting the band and its equipment to Indianapolis for Grand Nationals.

March-a-thon is a two part fundraiser -- part one is an online donation drive that kicks off next Monday, August 14th, and part two is a march through the Belterra neighborhood on August 26th.

Part one is going to require parent participation this week!  On Monday, August 14th, Kimberly Bertram will be meeting with all of the kids before their band rehearsal and walking them through the online fundraising platform we'll be using.  Please prepare your student with email addresses and/or phone numbers from at least 10 potential donors! They'll need to have that information with them that night.

The donation drive includes some friendly section competition and prizes, so the more potential donors your student has, the better!!!  Don't worry, guys -- no phone calls this year, just emails or texts, as you and your kid prefer.

Please let us know if you've got questions! Email Kimberly at fundraising@dsbandboosters.org

DSISD Inspiring Volunteers - Registration Needed for All Parents!

President's Update

Howdy Tiger Band Families!

San Antonio here we come! In a rented semi-trailer driven by a hired driver, wearing shoes from three different brands, using props that arrived just this week, paid for from concessions that may not have chips and Skittles because the delivery didn’t include them. The season has been an adventure! The dedication, drive, patience and flexibility of the students, directors and band booster volunteers to make this season a success is incredible. Thank you all for your support of the band!

The next 9 days are very busy with the band senior night at the football game Friday night, contest in Waco on Saturday, and State competition on Monday and Tuesday of next week. We need volunteers at each of these events! The concession stands on Friday will be busy because the game will decide control of the football district championship, and our senior parents will be participating in Senior night activities.   Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior parents, please sign up to work concession stand this week so we can have all the help needed throughout the game.  We need 29 more volunteers in concessions to be fully staffed!

For Saturday’s contest in Waco we need 19 more volunteers for pit, props and podiums, and 2 more for color guard field helpers.  The State competition performances also need 25 more pit, props and podium volunteers as well as 2 color guard field helpers.  If you’re planning to attend these contests, please sign up to help on the field.  These performances are the most critical of the season, ones that our performers have worked hard to earn, and they need your help getting in to position and off the field!

A special volunteer shoutout to Megan Byrd this week.  Megan has coordinated meals this season for us, and did a spectacular job this weekend.   Our order for Saturday lunch was cancelled by the vendor Friday evening, and then our dinner order was cancelled by the vendor when we called to confirm it on Saturday! Megan worked quickly to get orders in with businesses that could fill our orders on time, keeping our kids fed and focused on performing.  Thank you, Megan!

See you in the concession stand on Friday, in Waco, and in San Antonio! Thank you for your help!

Concessions Stand - Help Needed!

10/29 Game – (Senior Night for Band and Hi-Steppers):

This week is our last scheduled home game and is expected to be busy as the team will be playing undefeated Buda Johnson for control of the district.

We need 22 more workers, including 3 for the cooking area. Many of us with seniors will be working in concessions that evening, but WILL be leaving the stand to participate in the ceremony (likely pre-game) to honor these kids. Parents of 9th–11th grade students, please step up and help fill the spots for this game.

REPORT TIME FOR FRIDAY GAMES:

The earlier report time of 6:00 for Friday Concessions has worked well and made a big difference with servicing the lines that begin forming just after 6. I believe this helps sales and provided better service.  We ask that as many people as possible report by 6:00 so that we can make assignments and are ready to go when customers arrive.

From Mr. Woods:

Hello Tiger Band Family,

It has been a very busy week, but I'm happy to report the Tiger Band students and parents once again rose to the occasion!  Thank you to everyone for you understanding as we adjust to the absence of Mr. Woods for the next few weeks.  The band performed Parts 1-3 of the show in full uniform on Friday at the game.  It was so great so see the uniforms out on the field again for the first time since 2019!! Thanks to all the uniform moms, pit/prop crew, and concession stands volunteers for helping make things run so smoothly!  As we move forward with Mr. Woods, please contact Mr. Pearson for all attendance related matters for marching band.

Announcement Sheet

Starting this week the weekly announcement sheet given to students on Monday during class, will be linked here.  Check out the details to see what is happening and what your student needs for the week.

Thunder in the Hills 2021

Our 12th annual Thunder in the Hills Drumline Contest is this Saturday, September 18th. We have a full contest of 28 units participating, the most ever!  We will need all hands on deck to make sure this contest runs smoothly and is a positive experience for the performers, staff, and audience.  Please plan to volunteer for at least one shift.  All Tiger Band students will get their job assignments on Monday.  The schedule and assignments will be posted on the window outside Mr. Pearson's office. Don't forget about the student volunteer meeting the Band Hall on Thursday 9/16 at 4:45pm.  Contact Mark Glass operations@dsbandboosters.org or Matt Ehlers matthew.ehlers@dsisdtx.usfor more information or to volunteer!

Homecoming is next week and the schedule is different

Homecoming is set for Friday September 24th and the week is filled with exciting events! The Tiger Band will participate in the Homecoming parade and Community Pep Rally on Wednesday on 9/22.  Due to homecoming activities at half time, the Tiger Band will perform a post game show, so please plan to stay and cheer us on.  This will be our first performance with props, front drops, and dress rehearsal run to prepare for the BOA Houston contest the next day!!!

September 24th Grade Check

The 6 week grade check for UIL eligibility closes on Friday September 24th.  In accordance with UIL rules all students must be passing all courses to remain eligible for marching band. All students who are below 70 are required to attend tutorials daily and have a tutorial slip signed by their teacher.  Ms. Petro is monitoring student grades/tutorials daily to help ensure everyone is passing.  Please work with your students to ensure they get grades in good standing.  It would be a tremendous loss for them to lose eligibility now after all the hard work they have done to get to the competitive season.  To be clear if a child is ineligible after next Friday, they are expected to continue attending rehearsals, but will not be allowed travel to contests, away football games, or home football games.

Rehearsal Make-up policy:

On Friday 9/10 we reviewed the rehearsal make-up policy with all students.  If your student misses a rehearsal for any reason during the week, they must make up all missed time to be eligible for performances.  Students must sign in with a director during make-up time. Options for make up include 8:20-8:50 tutorial, 10:31-10:51 Tiger Time, lunch, and after school.   Arrangements can be made in advance if appointments or conflicts are known ahead of time.  Communication with Mr. Pearson is key to preventing problems.

President's Update

Howdy Tiger Band Families!

I know Mr. Woods has been in everyone's thoughts this week.  He was released from the hospital on Saturday and is recovering at home.  His recovery is progressing quicker than expected, but it will still be several weeks before he returns to campus. A meal train has been set up to organize our efforts to support Mr. Woods recovery.  If you'd like to help out with a meal please sign up at https://mealtrain.com/e1n64e .

Thank you to the amazing parents that volunteered at this week’s home game! There are two meetings tomorrow open to everyone interested. We have a Thunder in the Hills meeting at 5:30p.m. in the band hall (or one of the classrooms at the end of the directors’ offices/practice room hallway if the band hall is in use for Monday practice).  This will be followed at 6:30 by the monthly boosters meeting. Come out, learn about the programs coming up and where you can get involved!

We need Pit Crew and Movers to help at Friday’s away game.  For Thunder in the Hills we have volunteer spots throughout the day in parking, concessions, ticket sales, and registration.  Please sign up using the links above to help out.

Finally, why do we need everyone to help with Football concessions, Thunder in the Hills, and An Evening of Jazz (our spring fundraiser event)? All of our volunteering is important, and it's easier to see how some jobs like Kubby Keepers, Uniforms, Chaperones, Pit Crew impact the bands ability to travel and perform. These three fundraisers bring in $70,000. Without your help with them we cannot run these fundraisers, which would result in the participation fee increasing by $450 for each student to keep the band program at its current level of excellence. Please sign up to contribute to the band program’s success and keep the cost of participation from going up.

I hope to see all of you at the boosters meeting tomorrow evening.

Concessions Stand - Help Needed!

Thank you to our volunteers that have worked our first two home football games. These games have been well attended and the concessions sales have been great, however we’ve been short of volunteers for both games, which makes for longer lines and a more hectic environment for the workers that we do have.

Based on Sign-Up, we have the following needs for the next two events:

TITH - Saturday 9/18:  We need workers for the 5:00 - 8:00 Dinner / Cleanup shift.

HOMECOMING GAME - Friday 9/24: We still need 21 workers, including two for the cooking area.  This will be a very busy event, so we need a full team - please sign up NOW.

Also we’ve noticed that customers are lined up and ready before we are ready to serve…I’ll be changing the report time for Friday Concessions Help from 6:30 to 6:00, and ask that as many as possible report by 6:00 so that we can get organized and ready to go.

Thank you – Go Tiger Band!

Kevin Smith
VP Concessions

Thunder in the Hills Update

Thunder in the Hills is an annual percussion competition that the DS band hosts. This year it will be on 9/18 and there are 28 drum lines signed up to compete. This is all day event that requires all the help we can get. Students are required to volunteer for at least one shift(more details later). Adults can sign up here https://signup.com/go/UywWALb. There are opportunities for all kinds of support.

There is a required student volunteer meeting on 9/16 at 4:45pm.

All volunteer shirts that were purchased will be sent home with students on Thursday or Friday.

Uniform Update

Parents: Please be sure to have the following items before the next AWAY football game on September 17th (We suggest that students have a gym bag to keep all their personal uniform pieces and shoes together so they can grab and go on game days):

Marching Band uniform - Students need the Grey dri-fit shirt, long black socks, grey lycra shorts, and black shoes to wear under their marching uniform. Students with long hair need to make sure they have all items needed to fix their hair appropriately (hair bands, bobby pins, gel, spray, etc.).

White gloves that were ordered at registration and NOT given to the students at registration have been distributed to all students - symphonic and concert bands during class on 9/9 and wind ensemble in class on the morning of 9/10. All students who received their gloves at registration verified they had the purchased numbers of gloves at home. We fulfilled the order for a few students who received only part of their glove order at registration. 100% of students have received their entire order of gloves. The students may contact a band director for all future needs to be able to purchase more as needed.

White Shoes - We are still waiting for the white shoes to come in. Once they are ALL in, the directors will announce in class when they can be picked up.  The delay for delivery is based on the company's stock limits and delivery from suppliers. We are not the only band waiting for shoes.

White sleeveless shirts - The white sleeveless shirt Mr. Woods ordered for the band students has arrived. We decided that the uniform group will keep these shirts with the student's performance jacket and bibbers. They will be washed with the uniform after each performance. At the end of marching season the student may keep the shirt.

For the people who ordered after registration: Your items have been ordered but it will take some time to receive as these items are made-to-order, so it will be a few weeks to get them. If you have loaned/borrowed items, please continue to wear them until we notify you of delivery. You will need to bring back your loaned items to exchange for your new ones.

Uniform Volunteer Opportunities:

Sewing group - The material for the competition drops has been cut and serged, but we can't sew until we get the performance jackets. Please send us an email this week if you can be on a moment's notice for sewing these drops on when the time comes.

Kubby Keepers - Are there any more parents who would like to be added to our Kubby Keepers team? With two sets of uniforms that need cleaning, we are looking for at least 8 more parents to lighten the load.  This is a great volunteer opportunity for those who work during the day but can come after the game/show and wash, dry and deliver the uniforms back into the cubbies. Please email us if you are interested.

Thank you Marlene Gusella, Lidia Smith, and Katie Parmeson for your sewing and serging help with the various drops this past week.

Also, a big Thank You to our newly formed Student Uniform Team who did an excellent job of distributing and gathering the uniforms for your first formal game!

If you have any further questions, please contact us at: uniforms@dsbandboosters.org.

Thank you,

Su Gibbs and Suzanne Gusella

Pit Crew/Props Update

What a great turn-out on Friday for the Pit Crew and Podiums.  It was a success even as we made adjustments for a few new pieces of equipment!  I will be working to add more spots on the Sign-up page, however, if the sign-up list is full, please send me an email so I can add you.  The more volunteers - the better - especially as we continue to build the show with more equipment and props.  I encourage everyone to sign up by Tuesday so I can make sure that I have plenty of badges for the group.  This week is an away game so I will send updates as we learn more about entry into the stadium for Canyon High School.

If anyone is still interested in purchasing a Pit Crew grey t-shirt – let me know – it’s a great way to show your Band Spirit and indicate yourself as a volunteer during half-time (cost is $17).  Please text me at 713.256.3028 with shirt size and qty.  Payment can be made to Allison-Muth-6 @ Venmo.

Thanks – Allison B. Muth
