8/15/21

Hello Tiger Band Family,
Tiger Band Preview

Please join us Monday, 8/16 in Tiger Stadium at 7:30pm for a presentation of what we've been working on throughout Summer Band.  Rehearsal will begin at 2:30pm to allow students to walk their class schedule at 2:00pm.  Dinner will be served for students at 5pm at the home-side Concession stand.  If you haven't yet signed up to help with that event please do.  Contact Kevin Smith concessions@dsbandboosters.orgfor details.  If you ordered a Show Shirt at Registration for someone other than your student, Timmie Smith will have a table set up for you to pick them up inside the entrance gate at the Stadium.  If you didn't order one then, or need more they will be available soon through our TMF Spirit Store.  This store will only be open for a short period of time, once the store closes your item(s) will be delivered to your home in 3 weeks.  All items in the Spirit Store are custom made - TMF does not have an inventory of Tiger Band items.  Please keep this in mind as you place your order.

Orlando Trip

As most of you know, the Tiger Band is offering an opportunity to travel together to Orlando, FL during Spring Break 2022.  This trip is optional.  We have contracted with TMF to manage this trip, and all payments will be made directly to them.  At the top of this page there are links to a flyer (Orlando Trip) and to the  instructions on how to create your account at the TMF payment portal (Portal Registration Info) where you register and pay for the trip. Payments can be made online, or you can send a check directly to TMF to avoid the 3% processing fee.  The address to send the payment is at the top of the instruction sheet.  The Portal will remain open for new registrations through Aug. 19th.  It is possible to be added to the trip after the 19th, but you will have to contact TMF for them to reopen the portal for you.  Our TMF Representative is Keith Lancaster.  He can be reached at keith@tmftoursandtravel.com.  Please reach out to him for any trip registration or payment questions.

School Starts Tuesday

Our first 7:00-8:20am rehearsal will be on Wednesday this week.  I strongly suggest that your student get into a structured schedule as soon as possible in order to allow them the best opportunity to be successful academically and in Band.  This is a great time for them to designate a time everyday to do their homework (preferably not starting at 10pm or later) and to go to bed at a reasonable hour every night.  Especially Freshmen and Sophomores.  They haven't had the experience of doing Marching Band and School yet, and while demanding, it is possible to be successful at both when approached smartly.

President's Update

Howdy Tiger Band Families!

Summer band comes to a close with Parent Preview on Monday evening. The band with perform a preview of the first part of the show that they’ve been working on the past three weeks.  Please come out to support and encourage our performers.  Show shirt pickup will be available outside the home concession stand before Parent Preview for those that ordered an extra shirt at band registration!

Now that school is starting the fast-paced routine of marching season begins.  This is where we need everyone to step up and volunteer for roles.  I’ve talked with several area VPs that have said they’d like to see parents sign up to volunteer across the entire season now. We understand things will come up, and we would prefer to fill one or two spots where that has happened instead of scrambling to find the full slate of volunteers every week.

Please go to https://signup.com/group/656985444317352054 and scroll through the entire season to find the dates and areas where you’d like to volunteer.  We need every family to volunteer for 8 shifts in order for us to execute the transportation and band performance support plans at a level that will help our students make it to state competition.  Thank you to everyone that has volunteered already, let’s keep the momentum going!

Finally, corporate sponsorship of the entire band program is another outstanding way to support the band and has some great benefits including recognition on the band website and Facebook page. The deadline to have a banner at the football game concession stands is quickly approaching. You can find more information on sponsorship levels here.

Thunder in the Hills Update

Thunder in the Hills is an annual percussion competition that the DS band hosts. This year it will be on 9/18 and there are 28 drum lines signed up to compete. This is all day event that requires all the help we can get. Students are required to volunteer for at least one shift(more details later). Adults can sign up here https://signup.com/go/UywWALb. There are opportunities for all kinds of support.

This year we will be selling volunteer shirts for us to wear the day of the event. The design isn’t finalized but they are available for pre-order here.  Note: These will only be available via pre-order. If you don’t order now you can still buy one of the standard event shirts.

We are also looking for business sponsors to support the event. Sponsor packages range from $50 to $300. It’s an excellent way to support the band and advertise your business at the same time. If you own a business, or know someone who does, and want to support please fill out this form.

Concessions Stand Update

This week there will be a few opportunities for parents to learn more about the concessions operations ahead of the season.

Preview Night (8/16) – We will be feeding the band through the concessions stands between practice and the preview.  Please stop by to learn more about how you can help in the concessions stand this season.

Scrimmage Games (8/20 - 5:00 and 7:00) – We will have the concessions stand open for drinks and snacks during the scrimmage games this Friday.  Although we will be serving a few items, we will also be working to organize and prep the concessions stand for the season.  Feel free to drop in to help or get a feel for how things operate and how you can help.

We need you!  We are less than three weeks out from our first home football game on 9/3.  Although we’ve received considerable interest and commitments over the past month from families that plan to work in the concessions stand during the season, the Sign-Up portal does not reflect this.  Please sign up now for as many shifts as you can to help support the band boosters throughout the football season.   It is estimated that approximately 50% of the Band Boosters revenues are generated through the concessions activities, and it takes everyone’s efforts to make this happen.

Uniform Update

Freshmen Fittings and Adjustments - We really appreciated the 30 freshmen and other students that came in for appointments last week. We still have 19 freshmen left to fit for this season. We will be pulling them during band class throughout this week.

Parents:  Please be sure to have the following items before the first football game on August 27th - black belt and black no-show socks for the informal uniform.

You will also need long black socks and grey lycra shorts for marching and long white socks and grey lycra shorts for performance. It is suggested to get a couple of pairs for consecutive performance days. Here is a picture to show you what is required.

Uniform Volunteer Opportunities:

Sewing/ironing group - The material for the competition drops is due to arrive this week. Once we get the strips cut, we will send out a Group Sign-up for volunteers to help us sew these colorful drops. Please keep an eye out for a time to come in and sew with us.  Sewing is a big part of the performance uniform for drops on the jackets. If you are handy with a sewing machine or a serger we would love your help. We can even show you how.

We would like to thank the following volunteers: Jane Jacobs, Suzanne Meyers, Timmie Smith, Nareese Gibbs, Nate Gibbs, and Camryn Gusella for all their help in uniform fittings this week. We appreciate the time you gave to help out during appointments!

If you have any further questions, please contact us at: uniforms@dsbandboosters.org.

Thank you,

Su Gibbs and Suzanne Gusella

School starts soon
We have really good momentum going into Week 3 of Summer Band, and with our first performance coming up quickly on Aug. 27th we need to keep that momentum going. Once school starts, your student will have their focus split many different ways with new classes, new building for some, new teachers, etc. Fortunately, they have already forged new friendships and support groups to help each other navigate the newness of getting back to school – let alone being back in person for the first time for many students. Please help your students stay on top of their classwork so that they can continue the awesome work we’ve started. The Student Leadership Team will be setting up Peer Tutoring opportunities for anyone needing assistance. Taking advantage of this opportunity sooner than later is the best way to utilize the experience and knowledge of our older students.

2021-22 Tiger Band and COVID
We are continuing to monitor the situation and will adjust protocols as needed. Students are welcome to use masks at any time, and we are continuing to utilize bell covers on the wind instruments. If your student does come into contact please let me know.

Thank you to all that volunteered with summer band this week and to all of the families that came out to clean up the concession stands on Saturday! Everyone please take a look at the Sign Up link and sign up for a shift to help with this final week of summer band and the pool party on Friday. All of the activities we do from feeding the band to assisting with uniforms go so much smoother when we have all of the hands needed to carry out the plan.

From Mr. Woods:
Hello Tiger Band Family!

The first week of Summer Band ’21 went REALLY well! It was great to get the band back together again…haha.

Summer Band Week 2
This next week will be a tuff one, especially if your student isn’t taking care of themselves. The days will be long and hot, and the next morning will come quicker than they’re used to. Please make sure that your student continues to hydrate after they get home and goes to bed at a reasonable time. Plan on getting your student to the HS by 7:50am, so they have plenty of time to get their stuff in the locker and get out to the practice field before 8:00am. Tardy students, regardless of the reason, will run a lap with their section leader.

DCI Contest trip 8/4
On Wednesday, 8/4 the Tiger Band will take a trip to the Kelly Reeves Stadium in Round Rock, TX to watch the DCI Austin Celebration contest. Drum Corps International (DCI) is the governing body of the Drum and Bugle Corps youth activity. The performers in these groups are between 16 and 22 years of age, and travel the country through the summer with the season culminating in Indianapolis, IN at the Lucas Oil Stadium for the DCI World Championships. Modern Drum Corps is very similar to what we do in the Marching Band activity, without woodwinds and on a more complex and grander scale. This will be a great opportunity for the Tiger Band students to see live pageantry arts performances that relate directly to what we’re working to achieve in terms of excellence and artistry. This will also be an opportunity for the students and parent chaperones to practice loading school buses and traveling to and from an event. The return time listed on the summer band schedule is approximate, we will be asking the students to contact you when we reach Nutty Brown Rd so you have an idea of when you need to arrive to pick them up. Please make sure you have transportation planned for your student to get home from the HS…the Directors stay until every student has been picked up…and we’d like to get home at a reasonable hour, too. If you would like to pick your student up at the event, you MUST sign them out, in person, with the parent chaperone of your student’s bus. Only a parent or legal guardian may take a student from any band event.

Communication
The Band Staff and Band Boosters use multiple platforms to communicate with students and parents, with email, Remind and Facebook being the most often used. As you know, communication is a 2-way street, so I do ask that you are a proactive partner in this endeavor. One way to do that is to read all the content in these newsletters…yes, they can tend to be lengthy, but I assure you all the content is important and necessary. I often hear “I get so many emails I just don’t read them all”…I understand that but please make a concerted effort to read our newsletters and other band specific email communications. I will be perfectly honest, the best and fastest way to get in touch with me directly is email – I am not very diligent about checking my voicemail. If we need to talk directly, send me an email with your phone number and I’ll call you asap.

2021-22 Tiger Band and COVID
The Band Staff is sensitive to the continuing issues and obstacles that COVID can place on our day to day business of doing Band. While the DSISD can not require masks, if your student feels more comfortable wearing a mask at band events, that is perfectly acceptable. We understand that everyone has different situations at home that may require more caution and vaccination status can play a factor as can the looming threat of the Delta variant. We will continue to use bell covers in rehearsals. For competitive performances, we do not plan on using bell covers at this time, but this could change as safety protocols adjust. While students may wear a mask during performance/competition, we are not planning on providing these masks at this time. Performance masks must be all white in color. Should your student need one, I can give you information on sources for these specific kinds of masks. Please know that your student’s safety and the safety of all of our staff and volunteers is of utmost importance, and will be at the forefront of decision making throughout the marching season and the school year.

President’s Update
Howdy Tiger Band Families!

Thank you to all of the great parents that volunteered their time and energy to make the first week of summer band and Senior Lock-in a success! These events can’t happen without your support. This coming week we need 4 more volunteers each day to make sure meals are served quickly and help is available when needed so our performers can focus on what they’re learning. Please go to https://signup.com/go/iYiQXVp to sign up for a shift.

This Saturday, August 7, we will be cleaning out the football concession stands and moving equipment from storage over to the concession stands from 8am to noon. If you have a pickup truck to help move equipment please email Kevin Smith, concessions@dsbandboosters.org to let him know. Please sign up to help at https://signup.com/go/zknxerR .
Upperclassmen parents, if you didn’t order new band shoes for your performer please have them try on their shoes before Wednesday of this week! The order for informal uniforms is about to be placed, so please email uniforms@dsbandboosters.org if you need shoes so they can get that added to the order.

Finally, a reminder about drop off and pickup procedures. When you drop off your performers at the band hall please pull through the loop so they’re on the sidewalks quickly. When you come to pick them up, however, please park in a parking spot in the lot instead of sitting in the loop. We will have bus traffic, pit, and props all moving through during pickups and need the loop clear for them.

Uniform Update
BAND SHOE FITTING SESSIONS August 2nd and 3rd
We will be fitting all students for their band shoes August 2nd and 3rd starting at 8:30AM while the band is practicing outside.
We have a large assortment of sample sizes for the students to try on. Please have them wear socks!
Attention to all band parents/students who did not order shoes: Please have your students try their black and white shoes one more time this week to make sure they fit. Every student must have a black and a white pair of shoes for this season. We will be ordering all band shoes for both white and black on Friday, August 6th. If you are not sure of your student’s size the uniform team will be fitting shoes while the band practices, inside near the uniform room for the remainder of band camp this week. If you did not order at registration, do not worry, you can still order new shoes by this Friday, August 6th.
Uniform Volunteer Opportunities:
Fittings and adjustments – We finished the Seniors and Juniors fittings during our first week of camp! We will start fitting the Sophomore and Freshman class this week. We have 85 freshmen and sophomores that have NEVER been outfitted for uniforms. We need volunteers that can help with pulling/restocking from inventory, ironing hems and cuffs, fitting shakos and gauntlets for each student. We will get a Sign-up Genius site for this, but drop-in help is always appreciated. https://signup.com/go/upuBfCt..
Cubby Keepers – We have 14 out of the 16 parents needed for the wash and care of our uniforms during the year after each game or show. We need just 2 more people to complete our team. A Cubby Keeper is assigned a certain number of uniforms to take home each week (10-15 sets, with instructions for staining, washing, drying and hanging) and return to the band hall. This is a great way to help the band look its best!
Sewing/ironing group – Sewing is going to be a big part of the performance uniform for drops and stirrups on the white bibbers. If you are handy with a sewing machine or a serger we would love your help. If you are a wiz at ironing we can also use your help. Sewing days will be announced and all help is welcome.
THANK-Qs
We would like to thank Marlene Gusella, Bridgette Elliott, Marian Grant, Nareese Gibbs, Kimberly Fallon, Brycen Gibbs, Maddie Foster and everyone else who came by to help during Opportunity Day, Registration and Band Camp first week. Your help was greatly appreciated!
If you have any further questions or want to sign up now, please contact us at: uniforms@dsbandboosters.org.

President’s Update
Howdy Tiger Band Families!

Thank you to everyone that volunteered with Band Registration on Saturday and helped make Percussion and Color Guard minicamps a success! Special thanks to Tanya Conreaux and Melissa Tyree for organizing registration day for us! It was great to see so many of you at the Band Boosters table. If I didn’t get a chance to talk to you about the volunteer opportunities this season then please take a look at the spots available in the Band SignUp at https://signup.com/group/656985444317352054. It takes everyone’s help supporting the band in order for the program to be a success. Please look through the signup at the spots available to see where you would like to help and get plugged in. If you have any questions feel free to email president@dsbandboosters.org and I’ll be glad to get you an answer.

Where volunteers are most needed this week are:
* 1 more chaperone to attend the DCI event with the band on Wednesday evening — https://signup.com/group/656985444317352054
* Senior Lock-in Chaperones on Friday night — email Jennifer Stevens at jbms76@gmail.com or text 713-823-8257
* Serving lunch and assisting at band rehearsal — https://signup.com/go/iYiQXVp

Thank you all in advance for your time and help this season. It is appreciated by the students, directors, and your fellow volunteers.

Go Tiger Band!

Senior Lock-In Volunteers Needed
The Band Senior Lock-in is this Friday, July 30th from 9:30pm to 7:30am! We need at least 4 chaperones.
If we get more than 4 volunteers, we can do shifts if you can’t stay for the entire time. We need you to help make this a successful party for the kids!

Uniform Update
Uniform Volunteer Opportunities, parents needed soon:
Fittings and adjustments – At Summer Band Camp we will start to outfit for 140+ students. Volunteers will help with uniform adjustments, fittings, changes, and hemming for each student’s basic uniform for the season. We need help in this area as freshmen and sophomores have never been outfitted for uniforms. Plan to start July 28th during the day. We will get a Sign-up Genius site for this, but drop-in help is always appreciated.
Cubby Keepers – We will need around 14 parents to sign up for the wash and care of our uniforms during the year after each game or show. You are assigned a certain number of uniforms to take home (10-15 sets, with instructions for staining, washing, drying and hanging) and return to the band hall each week. This is a great way to help the band look its best! We have 9 people signed up so far.
If you have any further questions or want to sign up now, please contact us at: uniforms@dsbandboosters.org.

Thank you,
Su Gibbs and Suzanne Gusella
Co-VP Uniform Coordinators

GO TIGER BAND!
Band Movers Update
Greetings!!

Welcome to the new year of marching season! The kids need your help to make this season awesome and you can do that by signing up to help move their equipment! My team consists of moving equipment to, during, and from games and competitions.

Drivers:

The band has 2 trailers that need to be brought to and from away games and competitions. They will each need a driver.
-1 trailer will require a class A CDL. If you have a CDL please let us know.
-1 trailer (non-CDL).

Both driver positions will require paperwork with the district so if you are interested, please reach out soon so we can get that started.

Movers:

Help with loading and unloading of the band trailers with the bands help. Help setup / tear-down pre-game and halftime as needed.

VP Movers
Pit Crew/Props Update
It was a pleasure to meet so many of the DSHS Band parents during registration and talk about the support needed during marching season for Pit Crew and Props. As a reminder we are looking for at least 12 – 15 adult volunteers during football games and 20 – 23 adult volunteers for marching contests. To volunteer for Pit Crew activities please utilize the Sign-Up link. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly with any questions at pitcrew@dsbandboosters.org.
