10/2/22

From Mr. Woods:

Thank you to all who stepped up to work in the concession stand this past Friday.  We had a very lucrative night in large part due to your efforts.  MS Band Night was a success, thank you to Cary Pacelli, Tim Smith, Jackie Fushille, Allison Muth and all the Chaperones and Pit Crew. It's always a treat to see the MS students get to meet the "big kids" and have a great time in the stands with them.

UIL/TEA Eligibility: We had almost every student maintain eligibility at the 6 weeks, thank you for helping your student maintain their passing grades!  There is another grade check for eligibility at the end of the 9 weeks, so please help your student remain vigilant so that we can complete the season with all the students possible.

Away FB Game: THURSDAY, 10/6 at Burger Center against Akins HS - see Announcement Sheet at link above for schedule and details.  Formal FB uniform (long black socks with no logo or label stitching that shows, black band shoes, GREY DRI-FIT, lycra shorts, band cap).

Google Calendar Date Adjustments and Clarifications:

- Please notice that we DO have rehearsal on Columbus Day, October 10th from 5:00-8:00pm as scheduled since July.  All students are expected to attend this rehearsal even though it's a school holiday.

-October 10th Fan Pledge Fundraiser Kick-off meeting 4:00pm (Required for all Tiger Band Students)

- Add Marching Band Rehearsal 5:00-8:00pm on Tuesday, November 1st.

President's Update

Howdy Tiger Band Families!

Welcome to Bandtober! As we enter the heart of marching season, we have several competition events on weekdays coming up and a Thursday football game this week. Please check your calendars and sign up to help with pit, props, podiums, moving, and chaperoning if you are available.  We’re all going to need to work together to cover the band needs and our work schedules.

Parents: there’s still time to register for the NAMI Central TX event, “Let’s Talk”, hosted by the DS Band Boosters, scheduled for tomorrow evening via Zoom from 6:30-7:30pm.  Details in the next section!

HEB Card orders are due by October 9! This fundraiser provides the band with 3-4% of the cards purchased each month, depending on the amount ordered.  Currently we’re getting 3%. Please sign up, help the band, and still shop easily in store, at the pump, and online with your HEB gift cards! Sign up here and drop your check off in the drop box in the band hall if you prefer to pay by check by September 9. This is your opportunity to support the band as you do your everyday shopping!

Thanks to all that helped with concessions this past week.  We were a couple of volunteer spaces short of being fully staffed, and that makes the stand run a little less efficiently, costing us some business as the lines get too long for some folks to stand in. There are several home games left, including play-off games that will be held at Tiger Stadium.  We need every family to work three concession stand shifts to meet our obligations at these events.  Please go ahead and sign up for the football game on October 14 against Westlake.  This will be one of the largest crowds of the season given both teams records and how close the two schools are.  Thank you all in advance for your time and energy supporting the band’s fundraising opportunities.

Finally, whether you’re helping with contest day or game day, everyone needs to fill out the district’s volunteer registration form. This needs to be completed before you volunteer.  Thank you for your help getting this done and keeping the band program in compliance with district policy.

I’ll see you in pit crew Thursday and helping out at the contest on Saturday!

Go Tiger Band!

Concession Update

Another Home Game this week and we need help!   We’re playing Buda Johnson, the team that brought the biggest crowd of the season last year, so we are expecting to be busy on both sides and need a full crew.

In order to help minimize lines at the main window, we’ll be operating remote drink/snack stations on the home side again this week.  This worked great at the last game, so we want to operate at least one tablet at the north end, and at least two in the main concessions area.  If you have younger kids and are limited in your ability to help on Fridays, this is a great opportunity to get everyone involved - kids love sticking their hands in ice cold water to retrieve drinks!

Please sign-up now at the link found in the top section of the newsletter!!

Percussion Update

A Shout out to a few volunteers that jumped in unexpectedly during Friday’s activities – it was a busy evening with our Middle School students and the following folks jumped in to assist with putting up props after the performance for the middle school students and moving podiums during the game:  Jonathan Houssian, the Morton’s, the Romero’s, and Karol Moore.

We have a busy week and different schedule with a Thursday night Football game back at Burger Stadium.  Please pay close attention to the announcement sheet this week for the game day schedule.

In addition, we have our next competition on Saturday, 10/8.  Please be sure to sign up early.  We are limited to the number of folks that can assist with moving equipment on the field, however, extra hands area always welcome to assist with unloading and preparing props.

The sign-up links for football games and the competitions are located at the top of the newsletter.  Let me know if you have any questions or difficulties gaining access to volunteer.

Uniform Update

The jackets, bibbers and shakos are numbered with the student's identification number. That number is listed at each door outside the uniform room and on all of their hangers. Students need to keep track of ALL their uniform pieces (this includes hangers, bags, drops/inserts, jackets, bibbers, gauntlets, shakos/berets, shoes and socks). If a student leaves early from a game or competition, they must be sure the fellow student who returns their uniform has all the pieces checked out attached and hung properly. No more than 2 uniforms returned per student (their own and one other).

10/3 Monday Night Rehearsals - Students are required to wear an all-white t-shirt for night practices unless you have a specific section's shirt. Last year's white dri-fit or any plain white t-shirt is acceptable. Color Guard wears their purple section shirts and Percussion wears their maroon.

10/6 Thursday Night Away Game with Akins H.S. at Burger Stadium - ALL students will be dressed in Formal black uniform for the game. Students must be ready to dress in their grey dri-fit shirt, grey lycra bike shorts, long black socks, gloves, and their black shoes. We advise students to use a gym bag to carry extra uniform pieces to change.

10/8 Texas Marching Classic at Kelly Reeves Stadium - ALL students will be dressed in Formal white uniform for the competition. Students must be ready to dress in their grey dri-fit shirt, grey lycra bike shorts, long white socks, gloves, white shoes, and their show shirt. Students advised to use a gym bag to carry extra uniform pieces to change into.

A HUGE Thank You to Lidia Smith for her excellent sewing/serging skills.

If you have any further questions, please contact us at: uniforms@dsbandboosters.org.

Special Event: 'Let's Talk'

Let's Talk

NAMI Central TX

Presentation for parents (via Zoom)

Monday October 3rd 6:30-7:30pm

More than 40% of teens are not receiving the care and treatment they need–often because they are too embarrassed to talk about mental health or don’t know how to ask for help. Parents don't know how to bring up this difficult subject with their children either. This one-hour presentation empowers parents to talk to their teens about mental health by dispelling mental health myths and providing useful resources and healthy language to use.

What parents will learn:

  • How to talk to your teen about mental health
  • The difference between bad behavior and symptoms of mental illness
  • Early warning signs of a teen in crisis

Please fill out this form to receive the Zoom link a couple of days before the event: https://forms.gle/TCk8fG86oSQgp9dJ8.

From Mr. Woods:

Yesterday was a long, but good day.  The competitive results may not have been what we were looking for, but it was a day of good growth and community for the Tiger Band.  All our parent volunteers were amazing: Chaperones, Band Movers, Pit Crew, Meal Team and the fans!  And of course, the students conducted themselves in a manner on and off the field that proved that the Pride Excellence and Tradition of the Tiger Band is alive and well!  The season is just beginning, and the staff and Leadership Team is ready to continue to finish, refine and perfect "The Mandala Project".

Middle School Band Night: Friday, September 30th at the Home Football Game against M+G Johnson HS.

Our traditional MS Band Night is when all the 7th  and 8th grade Band students from both MS campuses join the HS Band in the stands for the 1st half of the football game and perform alongside their Band Buddies at half-time.  Please see the schedule for this event in the Announcement Sheet linked above.  We will need adult assistance with feeding all 330 or so students in the HS Cafeteria, please join us if you are able.  MS students will be excused after half-time, but they may stay with the HS Band, with parent permission, for the rest of the game after being signed-out with their MS Director.  This event is a great way for the MS students to experience a little bit of the HS Band experience and is one of our biggest recruiting events of the year.

UIL/TEA Eligibility: UIL requires eligibility checked at the first 6 weeks, and at the end of each grading period thereafter.  This means that our students must be passing ALL classes at the 6 weeks and the 9 weeks in order to be eligible to participate in any football game or competitive event.

Announcement Sheet: You will find the latest information along with upcoming events schedules on the Announcement Sheet at the link at the top of this page.  If you have a question about the schedule for the Football Game, Homecoming Parade or Contest that weekend, check the Announcement Sheet first for answers.

Google Calendar Date Adjustments and Clarifications:

From Mr. Woods:

Thank you SO much to all the adult and student volunteers that stepped up and kept the Tiger Band Tradition of Pride and Excellence going throughout the Thunder in the Hills contest on Saturday! We've had great feedback from spectators, Directors and performers already, and that's all because of you.  The TITH Committee led by Mark Glass, Allison and Ed Muth, Timmie Smith and Kevin Smith, along with all the other leads were absolute rock stars organizing running the event.

UIL/TEA Eligibility: As we move into the 6th week of school, please help your student keep on top of their schoolwork so that there are no issues with eligibility. UIL requires eligibility checked at the first 6 weeks, and at the end of each grading period thereafter.  This means that our students must be passing ALL classes at the 6 weeks and the 9 weeks in order to be eligible to participate in any football game or competitive event.

Bands of America (BOA) Austin Contest: 9/24 at Kelly Reeves Stadium

Our first competition of the year is this Saturday, 9/24.  Schedule for the day will come in a separate email. Formal Contest Uniform (long plain white socks, white band shoes, grey dri fit, lycra shorts, show shirt) It will be an early start and late return, so make sure your student is prepared with all of the required clothing for in and out of uniform and a full water jug.  Meals will be provided, but if you would like to send snacks with your student that is fine.  All students are expected to attend the entire duration of the scheduled events. Parents may check out their student from the stadium after the finals performance (fingers crossed) with their bus chaperone.  This must be done in person and is a required step for us to keep track of all of the students' whereabouts.  If you leave with your student without checking out with their chaperone, we can't leave to get everyone else home till we find out where your student is.  Reminder about pick up at the school after uniforms are turned in and the equipment is unloaded - please park or wait in the parking lot, not in the driveway or loading dock.  Be sure to wear your 2022 show shirt for the first time to the contest.  I encourage all our Tiger Band Fans to sit together to cheer on the performers, let's make some noise!  See Gina Morton for other Spirit items and ideas.  We will need a veritable army of parent/adult volunteers to get us to and from the contest successfully, if you haven't already volunteered in some capacity for this event, please do so ASAP at the link above.

Away FB Game: Friday, 9/23 at Burger Center against Bowie HS - see Announcement Sheet at link above for schedule and details.  Formal FB uniform (long black socks with no logo or label stitching that shows, black band shoes, white tshirt with sleeves, lycra shorts, band cap).

Middle School Band Night:  Friday, 9/30 HS students will be assigned a Band Buddy to mentor and connect with during the game. Schedule for this event will be available soon.

- September 28th will be a 7:00-8:20am normal morning rehearsal.

- October 10th Fan Pledge Fundraiser Kick-off meeting 4:00pm (Required for all Tiger Band Students)

- Add Marching Band Rehearsal 5:00-8:00pm on Tuesday, November 1st.

- Please notice that we DO have rehearsal on Columbus Day as scheduled since July.  All students are expected to attend this rehearsal even though it's a school holiday.

President's Update

Howdy Tiger Band Families!

Wow, what a week! Thank you all for coming out for the booster meeting, homecoming parade, homecoming game, and Thunder in the Hills!  I hope you all have a chance to get off your feet and rest — maybe with the help of an ibuprofen.

This past week there were 308 volunteer opportunities, and we filled all but 20 of them. Thank you all for your hard work and time to make sure everything is done and our performers have what they need.  A special shoutout this week to the folks that have not missed a shift in the concession stand across both home games and Thunder in the Hills; Brenda & Eric Lantz, Brian Tuohy, Daniel Jennings, Jackie Fushille, Jennifer Smith, Maria Morales, Nikki Lourens, Niki Jennings, Luke Hassell, Kevin Smith, Gina Bissett, Shannon MacAlpine, Suzanne Meyer. These are the folks that are happy to help you learn the ropes when you sign up to help in concessions, so please don’t hesitate to sign up for the next home game.

After a successful week at Tiger Stadium it is time to take our volunteer show on the road!  We have an away football game Friday night where we still need help with loading/unloading and pit crew to get the front ensemble in position at half time.  Saturday is our first contest and we still need 20 volunteers in pit crew to get our performers on the field for competition.  Please sign up today in the Football Game and Marching Contest sign ups.

Finally, did you see your performers sharp show shirts coming home this week?  Did you miss ordering one for your self, your other kids, grandmas, grandpas, and other friends and family that want to be part of the Tiger Band Crowd on contest days?  You’re in luck! You can order extra show shirts at https://stores.inksoft.com/dshsband/shop/home until 10pm Sunday, September 18 (tonight!). These shirts won’t be in for the contest next weekend, but we’ll get them distributed as soon as they are in so you have them for the remaining contests this season.

I’ll see you at contest Saturday!

Go Tiger Band!

Thanks again to the volunteers that helped with moving Pit Crew equipment for the post-game show on Friday.  I also want to give a shout out to all the student and adult volunteers that jumped in and helped to move equipment for Thunder in the Hills on Saturday – we couldn’t have done it without your help.

As we prepare for activities this week, we will need your support even more as we travel to James Bowie High School for the football game and then to Round Rock on Saturday for the BOA Austin Regional competition.  It truly takes everyone’s support to assist with moving equipment.  Please sign up early so we can make sure we have enough support.

Uniform Update

9/19 Monday Night Rehearsals - Students are required to wear an all-white t-shirt for night practices unless you have a specific sections shirt. Last year's white dri-fit or any plain white t-shirt is acceptable. Color Guard wears their purple section shirts and Percussion wears their maroon.

9/23 Friday Night Away Game with Bowie H.S. at Berger Stadium - ALL Students will be dressed in Formal uniform for the game. Students must be ready to dress in their grey dri-fit shirt, grey lycra bike shorts, long black socks, gloves, and their black shoes. We advise students to use a gym bag to carry extra uniform pieces to change into.

9/24 BOA Austin at Kelly Reeves Stadium - All students will be dressing in Formal uniform for their first competition performance. Students must be ready to dress in their grey dri-fit shirt, grey lycra bike shorts, gloves, long white socks and their white shoes. Again, we advise students to use a gym bag to carry extra uniform pieces to change into and to also pack their purple show shirt to wear after the competition. Make sure your student has their initials in their shoes for quicker recovery in case they lose them.

A HUGE Thank You to our Friday game-night chaperone team (sorry I don't have all of your names), Molly Cost, Ashley Lovelace, Morgan Gusella and Olga Zogaib for helping us plume the band (not once, but twice) during the Homecoming game. We would also like to thank Camryn Gusella and Mikayla Leatherwood for helping the Percussion team to put their uniforms back into the uniform closet after the Thunder in the Hills exhibition performance on Saturday.

If you have any further questions, please contact us at: uniforms@dsbandboosters.org.

Thank you,

President's Update

Howdy Tiger Band Families!

This week is packed with activity and we’re only two weeks away from our first contest performance!  There are several opportunities to volunteer, and your help is needed!

The next monthly booster meeting will be on Monday, September 12 at 6:30pm in the band hall. If you’re interested in helping with planning the booster support of the band. Areas where we currently need a volunteer to help are Colorguard Liaison (coordinate Color Guard specific needs with Ms. Johnson and communicate Color Guard specific information) and Props lead (help organize volunteers in loading, unloading, assembly, and moving of show props).

A new volunteer opportunity on Monday evening and Saturday mornings of marching contests has been identified. We need one volunteer to work the first aid station at Monday evening rehearsals. On Saturday mornings of marching contests we also need a first aid station in the event that we’re able to rehearse before departing for contest. It’s warm enough that heat related injuries are still an issue an in the past Saturday mornings have seen more than their fair share of wasp stings. Please look in the Marching Contest sheet to sign up if you’re able to help!

Friday evening is homecoming, one of the biggest nights for our concession stand fundraiser.  We need all hands on deck to fill every available spot to keep our service running.  This week we’ll be adding two additional satellite stands that sell bottled drinks and candy only, so even more volunteers are needed to help.  Please sign up today so we know we’ve got this covered!

Saturday is Thunder in the Hills, a percussion contest we host as a fundraising event. This is the first of our three fundraising events (Thunder in the Hills, Texas Color Guard Competition, and An Evening of Jazz) that we host over the course of the year. We need adults to help with the afternoon shifts.  Smaller schools perform in the morning, so as the day goes on the sizes of the ensembles we’re directing, and the size of the crowd goes up.  Please sign up for an evening concession stand shift or at one of the other stations to help keep this evening running smoothly.

Let’s have an awesome homecoming week!

Go Tiger Band!

Concession Update

Because of the large crowd/demand, we will be attempting to add a few satellite drink and snack stations around the stadium for our upcoming games to relieve some of the congestion in the concessions stand lines. This will require some additional resources, planning, and volunteers.

Our next events will be the weekend of September 16th and 17th, with the Homecoming game on Friday, and Thunder in the Hills, drum contest all day on Saturday.  Please sign up now!

Let’s continue to turnout the number of volunteers and the great attitudes that we saw for game one and it will be a really good season!

Band Movers Update

Good Evening Tiger Band Families!

Thank you to all volunteers so far!!  Welcome to the bye week!!  Early or not, happily accepted.  Road work starts again Sept 23 at Burger stadium and then Saturday Sept 24 in Round Rock.

If you are interested in pulling a trailer and not already on the list, please fill out the Google form so we can get you in the rotation: Driver Signup Form.

Please contact me if you are able to help: Bandmovers@dsbandboosters.com

Percussion Update

I hope everyone enjoyed a week off, but it’s time to get ready for the upcoming Homecoming Game and Thunder in the Hills activities.

It is important to note that this week’s Band performance will occur at the end of the football game.  If you sign up for Pit Crew, please be prepared to assist with moving equipment to the field once the game is over and then to the band hall.

In addition, the Percussion practice schedule is a bit different this week in order for the students to prepare for their TITH performance.

Please be sure to sign up early for the football game and TITH and do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions.

Thank you,

Allison Muth

Uniform Update

9/12 Sewing Group (9:30am - Done) - All of the serging is done. We are now looking for volunteers to help us finish our competition drops and inserts. If you have a sewing machine or not, we can use your help cutting velcro, ribbons of snaps, or marking up drops with a template, then sewing them on. If you are willing to learn how, we can show you. You can bring your sewing machine (zipper foot is helpful) and any scissors you are comfortable using. Please check in at the school's front office for a badge and come on back to the band hall at 9:30am.

9/12 Monday Night Rehearsals - Mr. Woods requires students to wear an all-white t-shirt for night practices unless you have a specific sections shirt. Last year's white dri-fit or any plain white t-shirt is acceptable. The Color Guard wears their purple section shirts, Percussion wears their maroon.

9/14 Homecoming Parade on Wednesday - ALL Students will be dressing in Informal uniform for the parade. Students must be ready to dress in their grey polo, black shorts, black belt, band hat, no-show (not crew) black socks and their black shoes. We advise students to use a gym bag to carry extra uniform pieces to change after school lets out. (If you are missing any pieces, you should check lost and found as there are many left over from the last home game on the shelf.)

9/16 Friday Night Homecoming Game - ALL Students will be dressing for the first time in Formal uniform for the game. Students must be ready to dress in their grey dri-fit shirt, grey lycra bike shorts, long black socks and their black shoes. We advise students to use a gym bag to carry extra uniform pieces to change into.

9/17 Thunder in the Hills - Pit and Percussion students will be dressing in Formal uniform for the Exhibition performance. Students must be ready to dress in their grey dri-fit shirt, grey lycra bike shorts, long black socks and their black shoes. All other volunteering students/parents should wear a past band show shirt or order the TITH shirt prior to Thursday on Member Toolkit.

A HUGE Thank You to Caryn Pacelli for her rotary cutting supplies and instructions and Lidia Smith and Doug Gibbs for all of their help in cutting and serging the drops and inserts this past week. What a tremendous help they have been to us all week long.

Thank you to all the students that stayed after school last week to learn about TITH. Only a few student volunteer spots available, but please reach out to Allison Muth if your student wants to volunteer.  We will need any extra hands available in the afternoon / late evening.

Parents / Adults – please sign up.   We need your support in the afternoon / late evening shifts.  Stay tuned for additional updates during the week as we finalize all plans to make TITH a successful experience for all that volunteer and participate. This is our largest single day fundraiser and requires all students and families to volunteer to ensure its success.

If you are interested in helping or have questions, please contact Mark Glass.

From Mr. Woods:

Hello Tiger Band Family,

Great job by all at our first Home Game of the 2022 season. Concessions was hopping...and that was with a low visitor attendance.  Our next several home games are predicted to be very well attended by fans of both teams, so please volunteer for the concession shifts on Sign-Up so we can keep up with demand. Chaperones and Pit Crew did a great job, too!  I love how the Tiger Band Family always steps up to take care of its own!

This week will have a different rehearsal schedule due to the Holiday on Monday.

Rehearsal Schedule for week of 9/6-9/9

T          7:00-8:20am

Thunder in the Hills Student Volunteer Meeting: Thursday, 9/8 from 4:30-5:30pm.  This meeting is required for all students volunteering for the Thunder in the Hills event on 9/17.  All students are expected to sign up to work at least one shift.  The Thunder in the Hills contest is one of our most successful fundraising events, and it enjoys a very positive reputation for being a well-run event with helpful and polite student and parent volunteers.  Help us to maintain that reputation by volunteering.

UIL/TEA Eligibility: As we move into the 3rd week of school, please help your student keep on top of their schoolwork so that there are no issues with eligibility at the 6 weeks. UIL requires eligibility checked at the first 6 weeks, and at the end of each grading period thereafter.  This means that our students must be passing ALL classes at the 6 weeks andthe 9 weeks in order to be eligible to participate in any football game or competitive event.

Bands of America Austin Regional: Saturday, September 24th at Kelly Reeves Stadium in Round Rock, TX - Our first marching contest of the year is fast approaching. We will need your assistance as Chaperones, Band Movers, Pit Crew and as the Audience Support Team!  Wear your show shirt for the first time.  Check with Gina Morton, our Spirit Lead, for information on where the Tiger Band Fan Club will be seated.  Up high and close to the center is the best spot to view the performance!  Ticket purchase information has been shared on the Tiger Band Family 2022-23 Facebook Page.

- September 28th will be a 7:00-8:20am normal morning rehearsal.

- Add Marching Band Rehearsal 5:00-8:00pm on Tuesday, November 1st.

President's Update

Thank you volunteers! With some last-minute help from folks not on the sign up we filled every volunteer spot Friday night! We needed it as concessions had crowds all night long, and the band needed our help with moving, snacks, uniforms, and chaperones.  With every spot filled we are able to manage all of this. Please check the Football Volunteers link at the top of the newsletter to sign up for the next game.

HEB Card orders for September are due this week by September 9! This fundraiser provides the band with 3-4% of the cards purchased each month, depending on the amount ordered.  Currently we’re getting 3%. Please sign up, help the band, and still shop easily in store, at the pump, and online with your HEB gift cards! Sign up at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeQnl6ngRRI7uXEDFQ0vpC1xAMmpjHAdyrMnWPTQDecFgh88w/viewform and drop your check off in the drop box in the band hall if you prefer to pay by check by September 9.

I hope everyone has a chance to enjoy the coming open weekend and rest up for Thunder in the Hills!

Go Tiger Band!

Concession Update

Thank you to everyone to came out to volunteer in concessions on Friday!  The first game of the season is always a little challenging as we get organized, and this year with the move to 6-A there was even more uncertainty as to what to expect…NOW WE KNOW!  The crowd was large, and our sales were almost 1/3 higher than our first game of 2021 and exceeded all our other games in 2021!  This was expected to be one of the smaller games this year, since the other team was traveling from San Antonio.

Uniform Update

Spirt and Social Update

Thank you to everyone who came out to the ice cream social on Monday. It was fun for everyone to get to meet other parents, and I know the students loved having the parents in the audience for their practice, especially the “lights out” performance.

The directors will be passing out a show shirt to each student. The extra show shirts and gray dri fits that were ordered at registration will be passed out at the end of rehearsal on Tuesday night. Please have your student pick them up if you ordered any. Most freshman would have ordered a gray dri fit (unless you got one from a sibling or friend). They will need these to wear under the formal uniforms.

Thank you to everyone who ordered spirit wear! We will let you know when the second order is ready for delivery!

Please contact spirit@dsbandboosters.org with any questions or concerns.

From Mr. Woods:

Hello Tiger Band Family,

The first time we load up and travel somewhere as a full band is always an exciting event, and this past Friday's Away Game to Vandergrift was full of excitement!  I appreciate the flexibility and "can do" attitude of Daniel Jennings and the Band Movers, especially Logan Lucas who volunteered to pull an additional trailer at the last minute in order to get all of our equipment to the game. Congratulations to the Tiger Football team on a nail-biter, last-second win, and I know that the Tiger Band had a great time supporting the team all night.  Our first half-time performance was a good indication of where we are right now in our preparation process - in other words, it was a very respectable first show performance. I'm looking forward to more opportunities to showcase the band's growth. As always, please make every effort to sign up to volunteer for the many opportunities you have to showcase your support for the Tiger Band - Concession Stand, Chaperones, Band Movers, Pit Crew, Sewing Crew, Kubby Keepers, Thunder in the Hills, etc. If you got to witness the pure joy and fun the students have with each other at all our events, you would not hesitate to lend a hand in some way to share in that joy.

UIL/TEA Eligibility: As we move into the 3rd week of school, please help your student keep on top of their school work so that there are no issues with eligibility at the 6 weeks. UIL requires eligibility checked at the first 6 weeks, and at the end of each grading period thereafter.  This means that our students must be passing ALL classes at the 6 weeks and the 9 weeks in order to be eligible to participate in any football game or competitive event.

Thunder in the Hills Drumline Contest:  Saturday, September 17th - We are hosting our annual Thunder in the Hills Drumline Contest in Tiger Stadium.  We have 30 bands competing in several different classes throughout the day, traveling from the Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Central Texas areas.  Our contest is known as a great event because of the venue, location, quality of judging - but mostly because it's a really well-run event with the nicest student and parent volunteers around.  That's YOU! Please be sure to sign up for at least one shift to make sure our stellar reputation continues untarnished.  All Tiger Band students are expected to work at least one shift.  Might as well work the same shift(s) with your student!

President's Update

Thank you to all of the volunteers that made the first band trip of the season a success! We had all but 1 spot signed up for, and from what I hear that was filled by a last minute volunteer.  Thank you all for your time and flexibility to get the band moving!

This week is our first home game and I would love to see the sign up sheet full this week so everyone can see how smoothly home games run when we have the volunteers needed.  Currently we still have 44 of 97 spots open.  The top priority spots we need to fill are:

  • 26 concession stand shifts and 1 concession stand cook shift
  • 8 pit crew shifts to help the band on and off the field at half time

Please click on the Football Game Volunteers 2022 link to sign up now!

HEB Card orders for September are coming up! This fundraiser provides the band with 3-4% of the cards purchased each month, depending on the amount ordered.  Currently we’re getting 3%. Concession Update

This Friday – Sept 2nd will be Dripping Springs HS’s first home game in 6A, and we need to be prepared!

The soda machines are up and running, most supplies have arrived, we have 3 pallets of water arriving this week along with fish, sausage, and additional hamburgers, fries, sausage, etc. to be delivered this week.  Everything is in place for this to be a big success…except for volunteers.

As of Sunday afternoon, we only have approximately half of positions filled that we need to operate.

  • The Cook Team is almost staffed – we only need one more!  I’m hoping one of the folks that came out a few weeks ago for cooking school will step up.
  • Thursday’s prep team is staffed – AWESOME!
  • Friday’s early prep group still needs three – it’s critical that we are ready to go when the gates open!
  • Friday’s operation shift is still short by 28 – we will not be able to operate at this level!

Please do not wait to let everyone else sign up, hoping you don’t have to…it’s not fair.   Additionally, for this first game, we do not have another booster club (that WE have to pay) signed up to help us.   If you plan to work in concessions, it would be super helpful for you to sign up so that we know that we can count on you.  If you’re new to the band and haven’t figured out how to contribute, just sign up and dive in.  I’m sure you’ve noticed that the band students and staff are working REALLY hard; volunteering is your way to support this terrific group of kids while they do some extraordinary things!

After this week’s game, we will immediately begin pushing for volunteers for the Sept 16th Homecoming Game, with Thunder in the Hills (TITH) the following day.   This will be a very busy weekend, so please mark your calendars and sign up!

Kevin Smith, VP Concessions

Band Movers Update

Good Evening Tiger Band Families!

Thank you for all of the loading and driving help received on Friday!! Rolling with the chaos like butter!!  We have a few weeks at home and a ridiculously early bye week and then we start hitting the road again.

Please sign up to be a driver.  No CDL or truck needed. The job is pretty easy.  The trailer follows you around as you drive.  That’s it.

As the season moves along the road schedule will get more hectic. We are also missing our semi-truck this year which means we need additional drivers on our roster.  On Friday we used 4 drivers and that included zero props or tarps.

We currently have 8-11 drivers on the roster with a need of 6 when we add the box trucks. If we can get more drivers on the roster, it will give each driver more rest time before needing to drive again.  This makes the trip safer for the drivers and also the gear.

Our finale weekend/week we have 5 events over the span of 5 days, all in San Antonio.

Please contact me at Bandmovers@dsbandboosters.com so I can add you to the roster.

Please contact me if you are able to help: Bandmovers@dsbandboosters.com

Percussion Update

A huge THANK YOU to the parents that assisted with moving equipment back to the band hall on Saturday night.  The students were very happy to see so many extra hands.

If you didn’t get a chance to experience supporting the Pit Crew – please sign up for this week’s away game thru the volunteer Sign-up. We will need adults to assist with moving equipment from the trailer, on and off the field at half time and back to the trailer.

Please sign up early – it’s a great way to support our students and participate in the action on the field during half time.   As we get closer to Friday’s game, I will create a “Group Me” invite that will include those that have signed up to volunteer – this allows me to send messages about Pit Crew help for the events.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly if you have any difficulties signing up to volunteer.

Thank you,

Allison Muth

Uniform Update

Monday Night Rehearsals - Mr. Woods requires students to wear an all-white t-shirt for night practices unless you have a specific sections shirt. Last year's white dri-fit or any plain white t-shirt is acceptable. The Color Guard wears their purple section shirts.

First Home Game with Wagner H.S., September 2nd -
ALL Students will be dressing in Informal uniform for the game. Students must be ready to dress in their grey polo, black shorts, black belt, band hat, no-show (not crew) black socks and their black shoes. We advise students to use a gym bag to carry extra uniform pieces to change into.

FYI on Gloves and Hats - If your student loses a hat or a pair of gloves, they must see a director to purchase replacements. Hats are $10 each and gloves $5 a pair. Every student that must wear gloves during the marching and competition season needs white and black gloves. Our marching uniform has one black sleeve and one white sleeve, and the gloves must match the sleeve color.

Sewing Group - All students have been fitted and numbered for their formal uniforms for football games and competitions. We are looking for people to volunteer in the Sewing Group. We need people who have sergers and/or sewing machines to start sewing drops and inserts for our competition jackets. If you are willing to learn how, we can also show you. We expect the material to arrive this week and hope to cut it up for the 170 sets we need. We do have a few people signed up from registration, but we need more. Please email us at uniforms@dsbandboosters.org if interested.

If you have any further questions, please contact us at: uniforms@dsbandboosters.org.

Thank you,

Su Gibbs and Suzanne Gusella

From Mr. Woods:

Hello Tiger Band Family,

The first week of school has been full of new procedures, new classes, new teachers, and of course, homework.  But our Tiger Band Students are handling all these new things on top of the great progress being made on the 2022 Tiger Band production "The Mandala Project".  As I always say...Band Kids, and Band Parents, are the very best Dripping Springs HS has to offer.

Dropping off and Picking up your student at the HS:

As you get into the routine of regular morning and Monday Night rehearsals, please review the expectations for drop off and pick up. It's important that we ALL follow these rules below for the safety of our students, staff and volunteers.  The driveway loop and the loading dock must stay clear so that students can safely get set up and torn down with their equipment. Thank you!

DO pull as far around the loop as you can

DO park in C lot to wait for your student

Do NOT pull into the loading dock area

Do NOT block the loading dock or staff parking entrances

Do NOT wait, sit or park in the driveway loop.  Our school buses and charter buses must be able to safely stage for student loading and unloading in that area

Announcement Sheet: Please review the Announcement Sheet for the schedule for our first Football Game of the season at Vandergrift HS.  This is also a great source of information about upcoming events and the weekly rehearsal schedule.

President's Update

It was great to see everyone at the stadium yesterday evening and to see the Tiger Band on the field again! Be sure to check out the photos of the evening by our Historian Jason Flenniken on the Tiger Band Family Facebook page.  If you ordered Spirit Wear and didn’t get to pick it up, please plan to arrive at the end of Monday’s rehearsal a few minutes early to pick it up from Gina Morton and Kimberly Bertram. They’ll be set up near the tree next to the band practice lot.

Be sure to park in the parking lot and keep the loop clear! Our students need the space clear to move all instruments back into the band hall and then get to their ride without dodging traffic circling through the loop.

Volunteers for Friday’s away game needed

Marching performances officially kick off this Friday with the away game at Vandegrift. Take a look at https://signup.com/group/656985444317352054 to see where you can help! We need help loading instruments and podiums on to trailers at the band hall and unloading when the band returns. We also need help in pit crew pushing the front ensemble instruments in to place for their halftime performance. There are even a couple of Chaperone spots still open if you’d like to ride the bus to the game!

If you scroll down that sign up, you’ll see that we have all the games available for signup, and for home games the needs differ a bit.  We still need pit crew and chaperones, but we also need about 50 people to help in the concession stand. There are positions cooking, preparing plates of catfish, nachos, and burgers, pouring sodas, and working cash registers. We’ve got a position for everyone! You’ll get instructions and training before the game starts, and there are plenty of seasoned volunteers that can help answer any questions you have. Go ahead and sign up for a home-game concessions shift today! We do need all families to cover 4 shifts so we’re able to effectively run the concession stands at each home game and through the early round playoff games that are hosted at Tiger Stadium.

Director Hospitality Meals Needed
Please sign up to bring a meal for the Band Directors and Techs for Monday Night rehearsals. Throughout marching season, the directors tend to stay after school on Mondays and work with students before evening rehearsals. Providing a meal for the band staff allows them to stay on campus and continue working and assisting the band instead of leaving campus to find fast food.

Meals should feed 6-7 people (Mexican dishes, chicken, lasagna, taco bar, salads, casseroles, etc.) or purchase a dinner from an area restaurant.

There are several Monday dates to choose from. Help the directors and the band by providing a meal! This is an easy way to volunteer and can be done with another family!

Concession Update

Thank you for the terrific turnout in the concessions stand yesterday.  It was great to see new folks working with the cooking team and also inside working alongside some of our regular group from last year.

Our first home game is coming up on September 2nd.  We will need a full crew on both sides of the stadium throughout the season, so please pick your spots now so that we know that we have appropriate coverage for all games.  https://signup.com/go/RCsxpJk

Band Movers Update

Good Evening Tiger Band Families!!

Hopefully you made it to the preview last night.  As you can see the band has a lot of gear to transport to away games and contests.

The band has a combination of different trailers that need to be pulled to events.  Parent volunteers are needed to assist with this. Please let me know if you are willing to be on the driver list.  Owning a truck is not required in order to volunteer.

However, on that note, we do have a special request for help pulling the gooseneck for the front ensemble.  If you happen to have a CDL or a truck that can pull a gooseneck, please let us know your availability so we can get you in the rotation.

The first away game is August 26th, and we need 3 drivers to make this work!!  https://signup.com/go/RCsxpJk

Thank you,

Uniform Update

Great Preview performance from all of our Tiger Band students Saturday night. Their persistence and practice are really showing what a great group this is. Keep up the good work!

Monday Night Rehearsals - Mr. Woods would like students to wear an all-white t-shirt for Monday night practices unless you have a specific sections shirt. Last year's white dri-fit or any plain white t-shirt is acceptable. The Color Guard wears their purple section shirts.

Friday's Away Game with Vandegrift H.S., August 26th -
ALL Students will be dressing in Informal uniform for the game. Students must be ready to dress in their grey polo, black shorts, black belt, band hat, no-show (not crew) black socks and their black shoes. We would advise that the students have some kind of a gym bag to carry all of their extra uniform pieces to change into prior to getting on the bus Friday night.

FYI on Gloves and Hats - If your student loses a hat or a pair of gloves, they must see a director to purchase replacements. Hats are $10 each and gloves $5 a pair. Every student that must wear gloves during the marching and competition season needs white and black gloves. Our marching uniform has one black sleeve and one white sleeve so the gloves must match the sleeve color.

Thank You to Morgan Gusella for her help in the uniform room Monday Night, Melissa Tyree for donating a small garment rack for our uniform room, and also a great BIG shout out to Suzanne Meyers for donating several boxes of Tide pens for our future stain removal needs.

If you have any further questions or would like to volunteer in the Sewing Group, please contact us at: uniforms@dsbandboosters.org.

Thank you,

Su Gibbs and Suzanne Gusella
Co-VP Uniform Coordinators

From Mr. Woods:

Hello Tiger Band Family,

I am so proud and pleased with the progress we've made throughout Summer Band!  We can play and march the entire Part 1, almost 3 minutes of show!  The Tiger Band made a joyful noise for the DSISD Convocation to get everybody in a positive mindset to start the school year.  The Pool Party was a big success, thank you to the Band Council and Caryn Pacelli for organizing the snacks.  With school starting, there will be more things for your student to focus on, so please help to make sure that they're getting to bed at a reasonable time so that school and band don't suffer.

Purchasing Reserved Seating tickets for Home Football Games: Go to the district website and click on Athletics.  Click on Ticket Information, next click on online ticket purchase.  The Tiger Football Reserved Seat Season tickets event will pop up.  Select the event and from there use the provided passcode to access the seat map and select the seats they would like to purchase. HERE IS THE PASSCODE:  2022FBRSS. This code is good through August 16 at 11:59pm.  DO NOT SHARE THIS CODE WITH ANYONE OUTSIDE OF THE TIGER BAND FAMILY.  Any parents have questions please have them call me, Elizabeth Lawyer 512-858-3237.

Band Formal Group Picture and Rehearsal: Monday, August 15th 5:00-8:30pm

Students will wear the formal uniform for the group picture (Colorguard will wear the shell and leggings). Students must wear the lycra shorts underneath the bib pants, long black socks and black band shoes.

Dropping off and Picking up your student at the HS

When dropping off or picking up your student, please follow the rules below. Before and after rehearsals or events, it is important that the driveway loop and the loading dock stay clear so that students can safely get set up and torn down with their equipment.

Tardy to or Absence from regularly scheduled rehearsals/events is sometimes unavoidable.  Students will make up the time missed, regardless of the reason.  Parent communication to Mr. Woods via email in addition to student communication with their section leader is required prior to the absence.  This is especially important for morning rehearsals - I need to be able to confirm that your student is safe and where they're expected to be.

President's Update

A big shoutout to the first concession stand shift volunteers of the year.  Thank you to everyone that came out Friday morning to work in the concession stand for the scrimmages.  We need every family in the band to work at least three concession stand shifts throughout the season, so please check out the link above and sign up for your spots. It’s a lot less stressful for Kevin and I planning to know we’ve got the volunteers needed for the concession stands to run smoothly.  To help prepare for concession shifts Kevin Smith, VP concessions, is also hosting a cooking school this Saturday before the Drill Frenzy performance Saturday to teach anyone interested how to cook the items we grill and fry.  Please sign up for that at https://signup.com/go/UuWKOrx.

It was great seeing all of the students at the pool party Friday evening. Parents, please know that we want to see you at the band social events too! At most events we’re busy slinging nachos, pushing pit instruments and props, or organizing something. When we get the chance to sit together for a minute let’s take it!

HEB Card orders for August are closed, but please start thinking about your September order! This fundraiser provides the band with 3-4% of the cards purchased each month, depending on the amount ordered.  Currently we’re getting 3%. Please sign up, help the band, and still shop easily in store, at the pump, and online with your HEB gift cards! Sign up at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeQnl6ngRRI7uXEDFQ0vpC1xAMmpjHAdyrMnWPTQDecFgh88w/viewform.

I’ll see everyone in Tiger Stadium on Saturday for Drill Frenzy!

Concession Update

A big thank you to Gina Bisett and all the volunteers who were able to join us in the concession stand Friday morning for the scrimmage!

We are looking forward to the Cooking School this Saturday, Aug 20 where we will be training our volunteers to cook all of the items that we grill and fry for sale in the stands!  It will be a great time and if you are interested in learning, don’t worry – we can always open more volunteer spots!  We need as many people as possible to commit to help, so we can fill out the cooking schedule for the season.  Be sure to sign up here: https://signup.com/go/UuWKOrx.

Finally, it is incredibly important that each band family work at least three concession stand shifts throughout the season, so start thinking ahead and sign up for your Thursday/Friday spots as soon as possible (Sign up coming soon).  This helps us with planning and ensures we have enough volunteers for the concessions stands to run as smoothly as possible for our home games.

Kevin Smith, VP Concessions

Summer Band Volunteers Needed

Hello Tiger Band parents!  We need volunteers to help over the next four weeks with some activities and tasks to help keep the summer rehearsals as smooth as possible. We’ve been mindful to keep the activities to 2 hours (or less) to ensure more parents can fit these times into your busy schedules.  Our parent volunteers not only keep the kids hydrated, well fed & taken care of, but are such a positive source of morale support for the kids and band directors, alike.

No experience required, just a happy attitude and helping hands.  Some activities/tasks may be outdoors, so please be prepared (hat, sunscreen, water bottle). Thank you in advance!

Please visit our Signup sheet with all of the upcoming Summer Rehearsal volunteer needs:   https://signup.com/go/SrbRntW

Direct any questions to Tammy Gorman, Summer Band Volunteer Coordinator, tammytexas@gmail.com or via text to 512.623.9437.

Meals Info

Hey band family. Don't forget to order your band meals using the following google forms.

To order summer meals click here. Please place your order by July 22nd at 6pm so that we can make sure you are all set at registration. The cost of these meals is $96 payable to the Band Boosters at Band Registration on July 23rd. These meals are OPTIONAL. Please indicate on the form even if you are opting out so we can make sure everyone is taken care of. If you are opting out, students must make arrangements to have food delivered before 11:30am. Students will not be permitted to leave campus during camp.

To order contest and away game meals click here. The cost of the contest meals is $165 and these are REQUIRED. The cost of the Away Game Meals is $60 and these are OPTIONAL. Please also place your order by July 22nd at 6pm so we can make sure you are taken care of at registration. If you are opting out of away game meals students must make arrangements to have food delivered before 5:15pm. Students will not be permitted to leave campus after school.

Percussion Update

If you are interested in learning more about Pit Crew volunteer activities – we will be creating volunteer sign up times for Saturday, August 20th to assist with moving equipment back into the band hall after the performance.   Please follow the volunteer sign up link.  Anyone is welcome to assist with these efforts – you do not have to have a student in percussion to participate.   For game days we may need as many as 20 adults so please start marking your calendar to support moving equipment and props on and off the field for games and competitions – you don’t want to miss being in the middle of the action.

Please check out the update for Thunder in the Hills – it’s quickly approaching, and we will need everyone’s support to make September 17th a success.

Do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions regarding how you can support all of these activities.

Thank you

Allison Muth

Uniform Update

Rehearsal and Group Picture on Monday, August 15th (5:00 - 7:00pm) - ALL Students will be dressing in Formal uniform and drill for a group picture Monday night. Students must be ready to dress in their grey lycra bike shorts, a normal t-shirt, long black socks and black shoes. Students can change back into regular shorts and shirts after the picture is taken. We would advise that the students have some kind of a gym bag to carry their extra uniform pieces, so they are not lost. (NOTE: Mr. Woods would like students to wear an all-white t-shirt for Monday night practices. Last year's white dri-fit or any plain white t-shirt is acceptable).

Drill Frenzy Saturday, August 20th 6-8:30pm - Student's will dress in their Informal uniforms (Polo, black shorts, black belt, no-show black socks, and black shoes) for this presentation to parents. Please see Mr. Woods instructions for dress times.  Again, bring your stuff in a gym bag for changing in and out.

Viper Band Shoes Delivered - The band shoes were delivered and handed out to the students this past week. There are some specialized sizes and the Men's white (size 11 1/2) that have been back ordered, but we expect to have them by the end of the month.

  • Students should try their shoes on at home on the carpet. If they are not fitting right, they need to be returned with no marks on them. A note as to why they don't fit is helpful so that we can exchange them for a better size. If returned with marks, we cannot exchange them, and you will have to buy another pair.
  • If they fit, then the best way to keep track of your student's shoes is to put the student's initials with a permanent marker either under the tongue or on the inside collar of each shoe (The bottom insole tends to wear off quickly).  We have black and silver markers available in the uniform room.

Kubby Keepers are filled - We have completely filled our 17 positions and 2 alternates for Kubby Keepers this year. These volunteers will take care of our student's uniforms and make our band look great throughout the year.  Further instructions and information will be forthcoming in the next few weeks for their sections. Thank you all for stepping up to help.

Thank You to the following volunteers that helped with shoes this week: Nareese Gibbs for organizing the shoes by color, size and student names & Kimberly Bertrand for her last second volunteering to help hand out those shoes after rehearsal.

If you have any further questions or would like to volunteer in the Sewing Group, please contact us at: uniforms@dsbandboosters.org.

From Mr. Woods:

Hello Tiger Band Family,

Week 2 of Summer Band is officially in the books, and I could not be more proud of this program!  The students have been very focused and committed to taking the information given by our great Tech and Director staff.  The parent volunteers have kept us all fed, watered and cared for.  I really think that you're going to be impressed and full of Tiger Pride when you get to see the fruits of our labor on August 20th in Tiger Stadium!

Rehearsal Schedule for this week:

Monday 7:00am - 11:00am

Tuesday 9:00am - 11:00am Region Masterclasses (Wind Ensemble required and anyone else interested)

5:00pm - 9:00pm everybody

Wednesday 7:15am - 9:30am DSISD Convocation

9:30am - 11:00am Region Masterclasses

Thursday 7:00am - 11:00am

Friday 6:00pm - 8:00pm Tiger Band Pool Party

Tips for safe and enjoyable rehearsals:

- Eat breakfast everyday - stay away from Dairy products

- WEAR A HAT - even if you "don't like hats"

- Get outside for more than 15 minutes at a time before rehearsals start to acclimate to the heat!

- Hydrate before rehearsals begin, and make sure you bring your water jug with Tiger Band Coozie filled with water (not sports drinks or tea).  We will have the Water Cow available for refills, but start the day with a full, fresh, water jug.

- Apply sunscreen liberally!

- No jeans or jean shorts.  Athletic wear and tennis shoes with good support are expected.  No Hi Tops or boots permitted.

DSISD Convocation: Wednesday, August 10th 7:15am - 9:30am. Originally only the Drumline was requested to perform at the DSISD Convocation event.  I have recently been asked to assemble the whole band instead.  If your student is available for this performance, please make every effort to have them attend.  Colorguard does not attend this event.  Dress will be Black Shorts w/Black Belt, Band Polo, Band Cap and tennis shoes (black band shoes haven't been fitted for everyone yet as we didn't need to have the by this date originally...).  Let Mr. Woods know if your Winds student is NOT able to attend.  There will be no penalty as this is an added event, but we do need all that can attend to attend.

ROAR Event for Freshmen/New Students: Thursday, August 11th 6:00pm-8:00pm.  All Freshmen and New Students should plan to attend the evening ROAR session, not the afternoon session.

Dropping off and Picking up your student at the HS

When dropping off or picking up your student, please follow the rules below. Before and after rehearsals or events, it is important that the driveway loop and the loading dock stay clear so that students can safely get set up and torn down with their equipment.

We’re more than halfway through summer rehearsals! Please remind your performers to stay fed, rested, and hydrated.  There were a couple of busy days at the med tent this past week because kids had skipped breakfast or hadn’t drank much in the evening after practice. Please remember when you come to pick your performers up to park in the parking lot, not in the loop that goes around. We need to keep that space open for the band to move in from wherever they are, and when we’re coming back from games and contests the buses and trailers need all of that space to get through safely.

The band needs several volunteers to help with rehearsals this week, particularly on Wednesday and Thursday.  Please sign up if you’re able to help for a couple of hours. The link to the sign up is at the top of the newsletter.

This Friday is the summer pool party and parent social.  We’d love to see everyone at Founders Pool.  Bring your lawn chairs, chat with other band parents, and marvel at your kids’ ability to march in water!

HEB Card orders are due by Wednesday of this week! This fundraiser provides the band with 3-4% of the cards purchased each month, depending on the amount ordered.  Currently we’re getting 3%. Please sign up, help the band, and still shop easily in store, at the pump, and online with your HEB gift cards! Sign up at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeQnl6ngRRI7uXEDFQ0vpC1xAMmpjHAdyrMnWPTQDecFgh88w/viewform

I’ll see you at the pool party on Friday!

Concession Update

Thank you to all of the volunteers that came out to help clean the concessions stands and move our equipment and supplies last weekend!   It was terrific to have a good number of workers – including some new faces -to get the job done quickly!  We are now getting stocked up and organized for the season.

Scrimmage Games – 8/12 **TIME CHANGE** This Friday’s scrimmage will begin at 8:00AM.   The times on the original signup were set for 6:00PM to 10:00PM however this year’s games will be in the morning with the Varsity scrimmage starting 8:00AM and the JV teams following.   Please signup, and come out to help.   This will be a limited menu – no cooking, just drinks, candy, and snacks, and will only be on the home side.     If you have questions, please contact Gina Bisett - (512) 773-4462 gbisett@gmail.com

Cooking School – 8/20 – The start time for our cooking instruction / demonstration will begin at 3:30 on Saturday afternoon before we feed that band and their evening performance.  We need to have at least 10 new cooks to come out and learn the ins and out of managing the fryers and grills and how to bread and cook catfish; we’ll need additional help to help fill out the cooking team needs throughout the season.   Please sign up now!

Football Game Concessions Volunteers – the schedule will be posted on sign-up soon for the entire season.  Please take a look at your schedule and sign-up for as many concessions spots as possible for the season.  We need all the help we can get!

From Mr. Woods:

Week 1 of Summer Band went REALLY well, I'm happy to report.  I hope that you've had the same kind of report from your student.  Mr. Mayer and Mr. Cuevas have jumped right in with both feet and are KILLING IT!  Mr. Ehlers and Ms. Johnson, along with all of the Techs are bringing their A game, as usual!  The Student Leaders and Band Council are doing an amazing job of modeling what it means to be a part of the Tiger Band!  The foundation that we lay during Summer Band is key to the success of the season for the long haul. As always, thank you to our amazing parent volunteers! If you haven't taken the opportunity to help out for a shift or two, please consider doing so.  The students and staff really appreciate it - we literally would not be as successful without you!

By all accounts, our Seniors had a fantastic time at the annual Senior Lock-in.  Thanks to Jackie Fushille for organizing, and to those brave Senior Parents who volunteered to chaperone all night!

Rehearsal Schedule for this week 8/1 - 8/5

Monday 7am - 5:00pm, lunch 11:30-12:30pm

Tuesday 7am - 11:00am and 5:00pm - 9:00pm

Wednesday 7:00am - 5:00pm, lunch 11:30 - 12:30pm

Thursday 7:00am - 5:00pm, lunch 11:30 - 12:30pm

Friday 7:00am - 5:00pm, lunch 11:30 - 12:30pm

Students are NOT permitted to leave campus for lunch.  If your student didn't sign up for summer band meals, please be sure that they bring a lunch.  Tara Ballard and crew have done an excellent job of making sure that everyone is fed, but only if they filled out the google form.

Concession Update

We cannot overstate the need for volunteers in all areas to help get through the fall band season. This is a special program and I encourage ALL families to get plugged in and to help. The students and staff will work extremely hard and put on a quality show as they always do, but their ultimate success will depend in part on the many volunteers that it takes to make it all happen.

Scrimmage Games – Friday August 12 (Times TBD)

Prior to the official start of the football season DSHS will host scrimmage games on Friday 8/12. We plan to operate the home side concessions stand with a limited menu (drinks and snacks) during these games. This is good opportunity to become familiar with the operations of the concessions stand when it is not as busy as the typical Friday night environment.  Sign up to volunteer here.

Cooking School! – Saturday August 20

August 20 is Drill Frenzy, when the band will end the day with a Friends and Family Performance in Tiger Stadium.  We will be feeding the students from the concessions stand that evening before the performance. There are already 10 spots available on sign-up for volunteers to help from 5-8.

Ahead of that event we will be holding “cooking school”, to introduce folks interested in being volunteers in the cooking area to how it all works.  This will likely begin around 3:30 and will end with this group cooking for the kids.  Topics we plan to cover include:

  • Equipment Operation and Safety
  • Food handling
  • Catfish preparation and breading
  • Cooking
    1. Catfish
    2. Fries
    3. Hushpuppies
    4. Burgers

With the move to 6A we plan to increase service on the visitors side this year to include Catfish prep and cooking, which will require additional cooking help. This is a great opportunity for those interested in volunteering for the cooking team to get plugged in.   This is a fun group, so please don’t hesitate to sign-up here.

It was another great week at Summer Band Camp.   Please don’t forget to take an opportunity to volunteer thru the Signup Genius link.  We have officially kicked off the planning for the Thunder in the Hills event where we currently have over 25 schools participating.  We are the host for this event, so please be sure to mark September 17thon your calendar – we will need your help to make that day a success.

Thunder in the Hills

Thunder in the Hills is an annual percussion competition that the DS band hosts. This year it will be on 9/17 and there are 21 bands signed up to compete so far. This is our largest single day fundraiser and requires all students and families to volunteer to ensure its success. More details about signing up for shifts will follow, please save the date to help showcase Dripping Springs and the band.

If you are interested in helping or have questions, please contact Mark Glass.

Shutterfly pages have been set up for each class to upload candid photos throughout their band career.  Everyone can share their photos and help to create “senior books” for a unique keepsake after graduation.  Click on the appropriate link below to join the site and to start sharing photos now!
