Group Page: 2022-2023 Tiger Band Volunteers
DSHS Tiger Band Mentor Program
From Mr. Woods:
Hello Tiger Band Family,
I am very pleased to introduce you to our newest addition to the Tiger Band Director Team, Mr. Daniel Cuevas. Check out the Tiger Band Family 2022-23 FB page for more details about Mr. Cuevas. Along with Mr. Mayer, Mr. Ehlers and Ms. Johnson and myself, your Director Team is ready to get the 2022 Tiger Marching Band season off to a great start!
Colorguard and Percussion Camps were a HUGE success! The amount of growth from all the students was VERY impressive, and bodes well for the level of excellence we can expect to achieve this season. I'm looking forward to getting the season started with everybody on Tuesday!
Band Registration on Saturday, July 23rd went very smoothly. Thank you to all the volunteers, adult and student, that worked to make the event a success. While we do understand that conflicts arise, we do appreciate you making every effort to attend this event rather than the Alternate Registration on Tuesday, July 26th at 6:00pm. There are more families needing to attend the Alternate Registration than we planned, so please be prepared and patient with us and we'll get you taken care of as quickly as possible. Please remember that your student and a parent/guardian must attend.
Message for all students about Camp Theme Days from the Drum Majors and Band Council:
Tuesday - crazy hat day
Show off your fun and bizarre hats to your friends
Wednesday - tacky tourist
Dress up as your favorite Hawaiian-shirt-wearing tacky tourist
Thursday - throwback Thursday
Wear previous band shirts from middle school or a past band season.
Friday - senior day / short short day
Tips for safe and enjoyable rehearsals:
- Eat breakfast everyday - stay away from Dairy products
- WEAR A HAT - even if you "don't like hats"
- Get outside for more than 15 minutes at a time before rehearsals start to acclimate to the heat!
- Hydrate before rehearsals begin, and make sure you bring your water jug with Tiger Band Coozie filled with water (not sports drinks or tea). We will have the Water Cow available for refills, but start the day with a full, fresh water jug.
- Apply sunscreen liberally!
- No jeans or jean shorts. Athletic wear and tennis shoes with good support are expected. No Hi Tops or boots permitted.
Communication is something that the Tiger Band Staff and Boosters strive to excel at...but we do you need to do your part, too. Our weekly emailed Newsletters with Announcement Sheets will start up again July 17th. The contact information you provide in your Toolkit account is what is used to email you this information, so be sure that your profile info is up to date. We also utilize the app Remind, the codes to join your student's group(s) are included in the attachments. This platform is used for short messages to communicate with individuals, small groups or large groups and can be accessed from your phone. The Tiger Band website at www.dsbands.org can also be a great source of information. The DSHS Bands Google Calendar has all the dates and times for the year so far, and when events are updated on the Calendar, it automatically updates your Calendar, too, once you've subscribed. And the Tiger Band Family 2022-23 Facebook Group is also a great way to communicate. We always appreciate any photos or announcements that you would like to share pertaining to our Tiger Band students and families! The Twitter and Instagram accounts will need a new moderator, so I'm not sure if those platforms will continue, yet.
Senior Parents:
- For the traditional Senior Lock-in on July 29th starting at 9:00pm to 7:00am July 30th, we need several Senior Parents to volunteer as Chaperones, and at least one Senior Parent willing to coordinate for this event to occur. Contact Caryn Pacelli at carynbandbooster@gmail.com to volunteer.
- If you're interested in a Senior Shoutout in the Football Program, the deadline is July 24th. Follow this link for more information Senior Shoutout
Dropping off and Picking up your student at the HS
When dropping off or picking up your student, please follow the rules below. Before and after rehearsals or events, it is important that the driveway loop and the loading dock stay clear so that students can safely get set up and torn down with their equipment.
DO pull as far around the loop as you can
DO park in C lot to wait for your student
Do NOT pull into the loading dock area
Do NOT block the loading dock or staff parking entrances
Do NOT wait, sit or park in the driveway loop. Our school buses and charter buses must be able to safely stage for student loading and unloading in that area.
Tardy to or Absence from regularly scheduled rehearsals/events is sometimes unavoidable. Students will make up the time missed, regardless of the reason. Parent communication to Mr. Woods via email in addition to student communication with their section leader is required prior to the absence. This is especially important for morning rehearsals - I need to be able to confirm that your student is safe and where they're expected to be.
Go Tiger Band 2022-23!

Concession Update
It was a pleasure speaking to everyone yesterday at orientation, and to hear the many commitments that were made to help fill volunteer spots this fall. We cannot overstate the need for volunteers in all areas to help get through the fall band season. This is a special program and I encourage ALL families to get plugged in and to help. The students and staff will work extremely hard and put on a quality show as they always do, but their ultimate success will depend in part on the many volunteers that it takes to make it all happen.
Concessions Cleanup and Move-in – This Saturday – July 30 from 8:30 to 11:30
This week we will gain access to the concessions stands at Tiger Stadium, and on Saturday will be cleaning-up and moving our equipment and supplies in as we prepare for the football season. We’ll need approximately 20-25 workers to knock this out. Please SIGNUP (list coming soon). Students that are willing to help clean and organize will be awarded volunteer hours, so please join your families, and come on out.
Scrimmage Games – Friday August 12 (Times TBD)
Prior to the official start of the football season DSHS will host scrimmage games on Friday 8/12. We plan to operate the home side concessions stand with a limited menu (drinks and snacks) during these games. This is good opportunity to become familiar with the operations of the concessions stand when it is not as busy as the typical Friday night environment. When we receive information regarding specific times for these games, we will post the volunteer needs on SIGNUP (list coming soon).
Cooking School! – Saturday August 20
August 20 is Drill Frenzy, when the band will end the day with a Friends and Family Performance in Tiger Stadium. We will be feeding the students from the concessions stand that evening before the performance. There are already 10 spots available on sign-up for volunteers to help from 5-8.
Ahead of that event we will be holding “cooking school”, to introduce folks interested in being volunteers in the cooking area to how it all works. This will likely begin around 3:30 and will end with this group cooking for the kids. Topics we plan to cover include:
- Equipment Operation and Safety
- Food handling
- Catfish preparation and breading
- Cooking
- Catfish
- Fries
- Hushpuppies
- Burgers
With the move to 6A we plan to increase service on the visitors side this year to include Catfish prep and cooking, which will require additional cooking help. This is a great opportunity for those interested in volunteering for the cooking team to get plugged in. This is a fun group, so please don’t hesitate to sign-up.

Summer Band Volunteers Needed
Hello Tiger Band parents! We need volunteers to help over the next four weeks with some activities and tasks to help keep the summer rehearsals as smooth as possible. We’ve been mindful to keep the activities to 2 hours (or less) to ensure more parents can fit these times into your busy schedules. Our parent volunteers not only keep the kids hydrated, well fed & taken care of, but are such a positive source of morale support for the kids and band directors, alike.
No experience required, just a happy attitude and helping hands. Some activities/tasks may be outdoors, so please be prepared (hat, sunscreen, water bottle). Thank you in advance!
Please visit our Signup sheet with all of the upcoming Summer Rehearsal volunteer needs: https://signup.com/go/SrbRntW
Direct any questions to Tammy Gorman, Summer Band Volunteer Coordinator, tammytexas@gmail.com or via text to 512.623.9437.

Percussion Update
What a great week of Percussion Camp! The kids sounded fantastic at the preview on Friday. Please be sure to get connected with other percussion families by joining the following Facebook page: 2022-2023 DSHS PERCUSSION Families. Thank you, Gina Morton, for posting photos and sending out information.
I will be placing an order for the Percussion t-shirt this week. The students are highly encouraged to purchase the shirt as they will wear during rehearsals to represent their section. For parents: happy for you to order as well. Let me know if you are still interested and payment can be sent directly to me via venmo @Allison-Muth-6
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions.

Uniform Update
Summer Band Camp - With the start of summer band camp the uniform team will continue to outfit all upperclassmen for marching and concert uniforms. Volunteers are welcome to come and help. Fittings for band shoes will be later this week.
FYI to Freshmen and New Students - Uniform fittings are traditionally done in class order starting with Seniors, Section Leaders, Juniors, Sophomores then Freshmen and New Members. This is so that we can get the older students out of the smaller uniforms to fit the younger ones coming in.
Band Registration Makeup Day (Tuesday, July 26 6-7:30pm) - Registration is when all students and parents order the required uniform pieces to fill out their student's band uniform for the school year. To make this process run smoother and help reduce your band budget, please inventory what fits and doesn't fit your student so that you only order what you need (this includes gently used items from siblings). The Registration table will be set up for informal uniform fittings only.
Volunteer Lists at Band Registration - Parents interested in volunteering for sewing, serging, ironing, and/or being a Kubby Keeper, please look for our signup sheets at the Uniform registration table.
Donations are always accepted, but please do not send used gloves or socks. Donations can be handed to a director or placed by the uniform door (not by the Lost & Found). Thank you all for the donations that have already shown up. Your contributions are very much appreciated.
- polo band shirts (grey only)
- grey or white dri-fit shirts (DSHS logos & no stains)
- shoes (back and white)
- black shorts
- black belts
- black DS band hats
If you have any further questions, please contact us at: uniforms@dsbandboosters.org.
Thank you,
Su Gibbs and Suzanne Gusella
