President's Update

Howdy Tiger Band Families!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the band moms out there we couldn’t do without. Thank you for everything you do for your kiddos and to support each and every one of their activities!

This week spring band camp wraps up with rehearsals on Wednesday and Thursday evening from 5-8pm and then Saturday morning. There will be a band parent social Saturday 1:30-3:00 in the band hall before spring camp concludes with a full band performance at 3pm in the competition gym.

Pre-season camp kicks off the week after school ends after the Memorial Day holiday.  Camp runs from 7-11am on May 31 - June 2, with leadership training in the afternoons on May 31 and June 1.

As we head into summer break, I’d like to remind you that opportunities to support the Tiger Band don’t stop.  Our HEB card program continues year-round thanks to Laurie Darilek and Jennifer LaRochelle. We’re currently at around $10,000 of gift card sales each month that raises $300 for the band program. When we reach $25,000/month in card orders our commission increases to 4%, bringing in $1,000 each month for the band.  It doesn’t take much to sign up and the cards you order can be used to buy groceries and gas at HEB and Central Market.  Get your order in today! https://docs.google.com/file/d/1pL6EvrDI1grfUfks_SoDM3VB9Dti9NDW/edit?filetype=msword

Finally, Kimberly Bertram has organized a Tiger Band Spirit night at Panda Express on May 23.  When you order and show the digital flyer 50% of your sale will be donated to the band program.  Check it out and take a night off from cooking the final week of school! https://www.community-fundraiser.com/fundraiser/events/promotions/fec309a7-a5dc-c612-ceee-bf5944fd99d1/en/landing

Uniform Update

Spring Band Camps

Spring Band Camps this week are May 17th, 18th from 5-8pm and Saturday the 20th from 9am-4pm. There are no official requirements for camp except to wear sturdy sneakers (no boots, sandals or high tops) and appropriate shorts (no jeans) and t-shirts. Directors may ask for all students to wear one color for the final preview. The biggest item is to have a refillable water jug on each day to keep hydrated.

Uniforms Needs for next fall season and Donating Items

Time is quickly coming up for our high school summer band camps in July. Please inventory what fits and doesn't fit your student so that when July registration happens you only order what you need. This makes the registration process run smoother and helps you reduce your band budget.

Mr. Woods has confirmed that the band's grey polos, grey dri-fit shirts, and black shorts will be the same style for next fall. If it doesn't fit, consider donating band uniform items back to the band hall and order a bigger size at registration. Donations are always accepted, but please do not send used gloves, socks, or old show shirts. Donations can be placed in a box/bag and either handed to a director or placed by the uniform door (not by the Lost & Found).

  • polo band shirts (grey only)
  • grey or white dri-fit shirts (DSHS logos & no stains)
  • shoes (black and white)
  • black shorts
  • belts
  • black DS band hats

A Huge Thank You goes out to our student VP's of the uniform team Camryn Gusella and Kiley Smith. These students have taken on a huge job in their sophomore years and have been quick to learn the responsibility of the team and the process to keep the uniforms going in and out of the closet in a quick and organized fashion. We look forward to great things in their coming Junior year.

From Mr. Woods:

Hello Tiger Band Family,

Congratulations to the 59 wind players and 9 colorguard performers who auditioned for a Student Leadership position on Thursday. Considering they started working on the requirements only a week ago, the amount of information and skills they displayed for our 4 judges were performed at a really high level. The 2023-24 year is going to be really amazing.  Our percussion students have been attending audition workshops since the end of March and will have their Marching Band placement auditions on Monday and Tuesday. Yes...we have so many percussionists auditioning that it takes 2 days to get through them all!  Exciting times, right?!?!  And speaking of having so many great students interested in going above and beyond, we have 14 candidates for Drum Major - so we've split off that performance audition and moved it to Monday, May 8th. Those auditions will start at 4:45 and are open to the public.

The Tiger Colorguard performed at the pep rally on Thursday morning to the song Womanizer by Britney Spears.  With only 1 class period to put the performance together, these performers did a GREAT job of representing the Tiger Band to the entire student body. Way to go, Tiger Colorguard!

Band Placement Audition results for Wind players will be posted on the dsbands.org website under the HS Band tab on Sunday, April 30th at 7:00pm. These results determine which band ensemble class each wind student will be in. Percussion students will audition for band placement in December for the 2nd semester.  All Tiger Band students are part of the marching band, there is no audition to participate in marching band.

Leadership Training session on Monday, May 1st has been moved to 5:00-6:30pm.  All leadership candidates will attend.  Wear practice clothing and shoes, bring pencil and paper and a great attitude!

Marching Percussion auditions May 1st+2nd at the DSHS Band Hall. See Mr. Ehlers for more details.

Band Banquet Friday, May 5th, 6:30pm in the DSHS Cafeteria.  The Tiger Band Council is sponsoring the Band Banquet again this year.  Cake and beverages will be available, no charge to attend.  Theme is “The Oscars” .  Family is encouraged and invited to attend.  Come help us celebrate a wonderful year!

Fine Arts Signing Day: Seniors and Senior Parents of students planning to continue their studies in the Fine or Performing Arts are invited to attend the Fine Arts Signing Day on Friday, May 12th at 8:00am in the DSHS Auditorium.  See attached flyer for more information, or contact Courtney Aguilar at courtney.aguilar@dsisdtx.us.

President's Update

Howdy Tiger Band Families!

Congratulations to the Colorguard for a fantastic spring performance this past Friday! It was a wonderful end to their performance season.

As Mr. Woods mentioned there is a video link at the top of the newsletter for those that missed the meeting with TMF about the Grand Nationals Trip. There's a $100 first payment due at booking, and the link to the payment portal is BOA Grand Nationals trip payment portal.

As our potential student leaders prepare for auditions this week, I want to introduce the Booster lead volunteers for 2023-24. We do need someone that can help Kevin and Gina with Concessions to learn the ins and outs of that position. Let me know if you’d like to help with this. Please support the volunteer leads with your time, volunteering to help as needed in registration, summer band, concessions, prop and pit crew, pulling trailers, packing snack bags, and all of the other behind the scenes jobs it takes to support our performers and directors. It takes all of us!

Uniform Update

Founder's Day Parade and Spring Concert

Founder's Day Parade will be this Friday, April 28th (depending on weather). All students will need their Informal Uniform (black shorts, grey polo, black shoes, black no-show socks (not crew), black belt and band cap). If your current items do not fit, please contact Mrs. Gusella or Mrs. Gibbs to be refitted prior to the event.

The Spring Concert will be May 9th at 6:30pm in the Auditorium. This will be the last time students will wear their Concert Uniform for this school year (for those parents wanting a last concert picture of their kids). So, they must have their grey lycra shorts, grey dri-fit or a short-sleeved t-shirt, long black socks and black band shoes.

Please check that you have your uniform and equipment together so that there are no delays in getting ready for shows or parades. A gym bag helps to keep your clean stuff ready. This is also a great time to make sure that everything fits.

Uniforms Needs for next fall season and Donating Items

The time is quickly coming up for our high school band camps in May, June and July.

If you have any further questions, please contact us at: uniforms@dsbandboosters.org.

Thank you,

Su Gibbs and Suzanne Gusella

Rehearsal Schedule for week of 4/17 – 4/21

No outside of class rehearsals this week

Wind Ensemble trip to Tobin Center/Six Flags scheduled for 4/22 has been canceled.

From Mr. Woods:

Hello Tiger Band Family,
Please add the REQUIRED meeting for the BOA Grand Nationals trip to your calendar on Thursday, April 20th at 7:00pm in the DSHS Cafeteria.  Our tour company representative, Keith Lancaster will present the trip details including cost, and how to sign up for the payment portal. Students are welcome to come, but this meeting will be geared toward answering questions parents/guardians would have.

While you're there, we will have DS Band Booster volunteers available to double check that your HS Band Membership Toolkit account information is current.  This is very important to get done as Toolkit is the platform we utilize for communication, etc.

If you're not available to attend, the meeting will be recorded and published online in some fashion for you to get the information.  The best way will be to attend in person, though.

Band Banquet Friday, May 5th, 6:30pm in the DSHS Cafeteria.  The Tiger Band Council is sponsoring the Band Banquet again this year.  Cake and beverages will be available, no charge to attend.  Theme is “The Oscars”

Founder’s Day Parade Friday, April 28th All students are required to participate in this event even though there is no school that day. Details available next week.

Fine Arts Signing Day: Seniors and Senior Parents of students planning to continue their studies in the Fine or Performing Arts are invited to attend the Fine Arts Signing Day on Friday, May 12th at 8:00am in the DSHS Auditorium.  See attached flyer for more information or contact Courtney Aguilar at courtney.aguilar@dsisdtx.us.

President's Update

Howdy Tiger Band Families!

The annual booster meeting will be held Monday, April 17 at 6:30pm in the band hall. The primary agenda item is the election of the booster board and area lead volunteers for 2023-24. Please attend to vote and learn what support our lead volunteers need.

We still need a VP Concessions to lead the concession stand fundraiser this fall. You’ll have Kevin Smith to work with you, so this isn’t a position where you’ll have to try to figure things out on the fly.

The VP Operations position is also open.  This volunteer works with the Booster president to ensure all current activities are progressing and helps resolve any issues that may be impacting an activity.

Spring Camp is coming up in May and pre-season camp the week after school is out.  Mark your calendars now!  There will be a parent social the Saturday of Spring Camp, May 20 for incoming band parents to learn more about how the boosters help support the band program before we hear the 2023-24 Tiger Band perform together for the first time.

Thank you for your support of the Tiger Band program this year and thank you in advance for your help ensuring the boosters continue to support the band and give our performers every opportunity to excel that we can.
Go Tiger Band!

From Mr. Woods:

Hello Tiger Band Family,

Both the HS Maroon and Gold Jazz Orchestra ensembles, along with DSMS and SSMS Jazz Bands, put on a very entertaining concert on 4/5.  It was great to see all the interest and talent of both MS and the HS students expressed in a different way from the traditional concert band setting.

The DSHS Trombone Choir performed at UT on Thursday night for the International Trombone Festival. The Trombone Choir, under the direction of Mr. Clayton Heath, performed a piece they've been working on since December, listened to the UT Trombone Choir, then participated in a mass trombone choir performance of "76 Trombones" with all of the other HS performers, the UT group and the guest artist.  Thank you for representing the Tiger Band and Congratulations on a great performance!

President's Update

Howdy Tiger Band Family!

It was great to hear all of the Jazz Orchestras from the middle schools and high school this past week at the Jazz Concert. Bravo to all of the performers!

Thank you to everyone that participated in the silent auction that overlapped with the Jazz Concert.  It was a huge success! A special thank you to all the band families that donated items and worked with their businesses to donate.  Kimberly Bertram and Caryn Pacelli did a fantastic job getting the online auction set up after working to collect all of these items.  If you won an item it will be available before and after the monthly booster meeting tomorrow and the annual general booster meeting next Monday. Please email SilentAuction@dsbandboosters.orgto let Kimberly  and Caryn when you plan to pick up your item.

This Monday at 6:30pm we have the monthly booster meeting.  This  will be followed by the annual booster general meeting on Monday, April 17 at 6:30pm.  The meeting tomorrow covers our usual planning, so come out to learn what's going on.  The slate of board members for the 2023-24 school year will be considered at the meeting on April 17.

We are still looking for a co-VP of Concessions for the coming year.  It is critical we fill this position to allow for a smooth transition to maintain our concessions fundraiser.  If you're willing to help with the weekly supply ordering and overseeing the organization on game nights please contact me at president@dsbandboosters.org or 979-219-2828, Tanya Conreaux or Tara Ballard to let us know.

I hope to see you all at a meeting in the next week or so.

President's Update

Howdy Tiger Band Families!

There are two opportunities to support the Tiger Band program this week!  First, on Wednesday evening the Jazz orchestras have their spring concert at 6:30pm in the DSHS Auditorium. The Silent Auction from Evening of Jazz has been moved to be part of this concert.  We’ll have items available for bidding on display in the foyer. Bidding is completely online this year though.  Please go to https://givebutter.com/c/rIXYi7/auction, register to bid, and take a look at the fantastic items donated by local businesses and band friends and family. Thank you, Kimberly Bertram and Caryn Pacelli for organizing the auction!

The deadline to order May HEB cards is this week!  Our orders have dipped a bit the past couple of months. Please consider signing up for a monthly order for your grocery shopping so we can grow this program to a point where we’re getting the biggest contribution to the band from HEB for our gift card orders.

We are still looking for volunteers to lead Concessions and serve as VP Operations this coming year. Please email me, Tanya Conreaux, or Tara Ballard if you have any questions about the positions and if you’re interested.

Finally, congratulations to the Varsity Color Guard on earning their highest score of the season at the state competition this past weekend!

I’ll see you all Wednesday at the Jazz Orchestra concert and silent auction!

President's Update

Howdy Tiger Band Families!

It was great to see all of the bands perform this past week ahead of their concert and sight-reading competitions.  There will be a send off performance by the Varsity Colorguard this Friday at 7:30pm in the competition gym as they head to the TCGC Winter Guard State Championships in College Station this weekend!

Please mark your calendars for Wednesday, April 5.  That evening the Jazz Orchestras will host their concert in the school auditorium beginning at 6:30pm.  The silent auction for items donated by local businesses will be held online and will run through the concert so you’ll have a chance to see the items, place bids on your favorites, and enjoy the performance of the jazz orchestras that they’ve prepared for all spring.  Doors will open at 6pm so you’ll have time to review the silent auction before the music begins.

Finally, we are still looking for three volunteers to step into leading roles for the boosters this coming year. The DSMS treasurer, VP of Operations, and Concession Stand lead positions are important for the continued success of the band program.

The DSMS Treasurer works with the DSMS directors to purchase equipment and supplies with money raised through the middle school fundraisers.  If you’ve got a band student at DSMS next year and can help with maintaining the records of fundraising income and any purchases please email Tanya Conreaux (tanyaconreaux@gmail.com) or Tara Ballard (taraballard@gmail.com) to let them know you’d like to help.

The VP of Operations assists the Booster President with keeping up with all activities the boosters are performing to make sure the leads have the help and support they need for their area.

The Concessions lead handles ordering of supplies that we sell during the football games in the fall, oversees the activity of the concession stands during games to keep windows stocked and operation, coordinates with the Cheer concession stand lead on the concession stand needs for sub-varsity games, and coordinates with the Athletic department on the season schedule so the boosters are aware of when we will be running the concession stand. This coming year you would be co-leading the concession stand with Kevin Smith and Gina Bisett to learn the position, and in the 2024-25 school year you would be the Concessions Lead.  This is an important position because the concession stands are the booster’s biggest fundraiser. The opportunity to learn the position from Kevin and Gina as co-leads is one that few leads have.

If you are willing to help with any of these positions, please email Tanya Conreaux (tanyaconreaux@gmail.com) or Tara Ballard (taraballard@gmail.com) to let them know you’d like to help.  Thank you for your support of the Tiger Band program!

From Mr. Woods:

Hello Tiger Band Family,

Welcome back, I hope that everyone has had a restful and energizing Spring Break!  These last few months of school will be filled with all kinds of different events and opportunities to prepare for and show off all of the great things we've been working on this semester.  This is also the time of year that we start preparing for the 2023 Marching Band season.  I always find this to be a bittersweet time, as our Seniors are showcasing the culmination of their 4 year Tiger Band adventure and we start integrating the rising 9th graders into the Tiger Band Family.  As always, your support of the Tiger Band is important to the success of these transitions.

Congratulations to the Varsity and JV Winterguards on very successful performances over this weekend.  The JV Winterguard finished their competitive season at the TCGC Novice/Regional A Championships held at Moe and Gene Johnson HS with a 12 point increase over their last performance score.  This team has 5 performers that are wind players and just started learning their colorguard skills in December, and 2 Middle School students performed, too.  The Varsity group traveled to Coppell HS in Dallas to compete at the Winter Guard International Dallas Regional in a field of 40 Scholastic A teams.  With the strongest performance to date, the Varsity group earned 23rd place.  They will be traveling to College Station, TX on April 1st to compete in the TCGC State Championships.  Congratulations to all our Guard performers, and continued best wishes to the Varsity group.

Pre UIL Concerts— March 21st and 23rd at 6:30pm in the DSHS Auditorium. Concert Band and Symphonic Band will perform on Tuesday, March 21st.  Wind Ensemble will perform on Thursday, March 23rd. From Mr. Woods:

Hello Tiger Band Family,

This has been a really rough week.  I am reminded, again, how important our Tiger Band Family is to our students and our families' lives.  I appreciate all the parents who helped get those students that wanted to attend Dorian's memorial service.  It was a lovely service, a beautiful setting, and it was very moving to see such a large number of Tiger Band students and parents there. Please hold the Kwellers, Ben, Liz and Judah, in your hearts.

Please check out the President's Update for more information on the Evening of Jazz tickets, raffle, Silent Auction, etc. The Booster Board will be considering alternate ways to repurpose the Silent Auction, possible at the Jazz Orchestra Concert on April 5th.  Please put that date on your calendar.

There will not be a newsletter sent out on Sunday, 3/12.  Please enjoy a safe and relaxing Spring Break!

President's Update

Howdy Tiger Band Families,

Thank you all for understanding our quick change in plans with Evening of Jazz as we mourn the tragic loss of Dorian. The raffle drawing was held in accordance with Texas law, with the winner being the Waller family. The other components of the event are being replanned.

There will not be an event at Dripping Springs Ranch Park.  We’re asking for your input on how to handle your event ticket purchases. Please complete https://forms.gle/72TLaYT9R5gYGvTXA before Monday, March 20 to indicate if your event ticket purchase is a donation to the band boosters to support the Tiger Band program or to request a refund. It’s important we receive your request by that date so we are able to complete the process before the new band booster board members are elected in the general meeting in April.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
