A Great Loss

A Great Loss

Hello Tiger Band Family,

It is with great sorrow that I am contacting you today.  Last night one of our own Tiger Band students, Dorian Kweller - Junior Percussionist, passed away last night. Our students are hurting right now, but please know that our Counseling Office and Administration are working to provide support for any and all students wanting to have a place to be or someone to talk with.  The Band Staff is also here for any and all needs.  If you have any questions about services available, please contact Retta Ary or Angela Gamez.  Please keep the Kweller's, Ben, Liz and Judah in your thoughts.

DSHS Community,

I have some heartbreaking news to share. Last night, DSHS Junior Dorian Kweller was killed in a car accident. Dorian was a beloved classmate and friend, an exceptionally talented musician, and a proud member of the Tiger Band.

Tragedies like this can have a profound effect on students, even if they were not directly connected to Dorian. Extra counselors and Licensed Mental Health Providers were on campus today to support students and staff and will continue to be available to those in need.

Counseling will be available in the library tomorrow (Wednesday, March 1) and Thursday (March 2) from 10 am – 2 pm. Should students need additional support or resources, please reach out to your school counselor. We are all here to help.

From Mr. Woods:

Hello Tiger Band Family,
Congratulations to Mr. Ehlers, Mr. Demetriou and the entire DSISD Percussion Program on a really fantastic concert "Momentum" on Friday.  Such a variety of styles, sounds and levels of experience all in one evening was really inspiring.  Thank you to Allison Muth for helping to feed all 70+ students!

From Mr. Woods:

Hello Tiger Band Family,

We've had a busy week, back to firing on all cylinders after the ice and TMEA.

UIL Solo and Ensemble: The rehearsals with accompanists began and have been very productive.  There have been some slight adjustments to the original schedule, so I appreciate the students' flexibility.  This week the rehearsals will continue and the UIL Solo and Ensemble event is Saturday, Feb. 25 at Hays HS.  I haven't received the schedule from the host yet, but as soon as I do, I will let you know what time the student's performance has been scheduled for.  Students that are academically ineligible to participate in the UIL solo event MUST perform at the Recital Series on Monday, 2/27 starting at 5:30pm. This event will not be accompanied.  Parents are welcome to attend the performances.  This performance will satisfy the solo performance requirement to sign up for band next year.

Congratulations to the JV and Varsity Winterguards and Ms. Johnson for very strong performances at the TCGC contest hosted by Hays HS.  The Varsity team was awarded 2nd place in the Scholastic National A class in a field of 9 competitors. Special thanks to Timmie Smith for making the quick trip to Dallas to pick up the JV team's props and pulling the trailer and overall floor crew help.

Congratulations also to the Percussion students grades 6-12 and Mr. Ehlers on a great day of solo and ensemble performances.  Outstanding soloists chosen by the judges are:

HS Marimba: Jackie Garcia and Jasmine Zogaib

HS Snare: Parker Hoffman and Jaden Pina

MS Marimba: Isla Conreaux

MS Snare: Judah Kweller

Percussion Ensemble Concert "Momentum": will feature MS and HS students on Friday, 2/24 at 7:00pm in the DSHS Auditorium. This promises to be a really great celebration of the progress the Percussion program has made and showcase the "Momentum" these students are creating.  See you there!

President's Update

Howdy Tiger Band Families!

All money collected for event tickets, unsold event tickets, and ticket order forms and money (middle school only) are due Thursday of this week. Please return them to your director!  This is needed to ensure we have the correct attendance for our caterer, Pok e Jo’s Barbecue.

Before we get to Evening of Jazz there are a couple of events this week.  Monday evening at 6:30p.m. we’ll meet at the band hall or orchestra hall for the monthly booster meeting.  We need volunteers for two subcommittees.  The Financial Review Subcommittee will review the financials for the 2021-22 year. If you have experience with bookkeeping and are willing to help with this committee please let me know.  The second subcommittee is the Nominating Committee. This subcommittee will identify nominees for positions on the booster board, event leads, and liaisons that will be open after the end of the school year. If you’ve got some ideas of who would be great leading our events or would like to lead yourself please let me know!

Friday is the spring percussion concert at 7 p.m. in the auditorium.

The Evening of Jazz Fundraiser is a week and a half away! Students need to return ticket packets with unsold tickets, the stubs of sold raffle tickets, and the money for sales this week by Thursday to their director. If you're interested in reserving a table for the event or prefer to buy event tickets online you may visit https://dsbandboosters.membershiptoolkit.com/store/5020 to purchase tickets.

A signup for student and adult volunteers for the event will be available this week.  We need help with setup, monitoring the silent auction and cashiers. Student volunteers will be selling raffle tickets at the event and helping bus tables. Finally, there is a dessert auction at Evening of Jazz. Students that donate a tray of 2 dozen baked goods will receive credit for two service hours. Please let me know if you have any questions about Evening of Jazz!

President's Update

Howdy Tiger Band Families!

What a week!  I know some families are still without power and water, but I hope the coming week is an improvement for all of us. Congratulations to the JV Winterguard for their fourth-place finish at Akins this weekend, and to all the percussion soloists that performed on Saturday!

The deadline to order HEB cards to use in March is coming up February 9. Please get your order in now, and if you haven't participated before, think about jumping in to help us earn the highest percentage back from HEB. Please get your order in before Thursday!

Ticket packets for the Evening of Jazz Fundraiser didn’t get out last week, but they’re on their way this week! That means students only have about two weeks to sell event tickets.  Students are able to continue selling raffle tickets up until March 1. The top raffle seller at the high school and each middle school will receive a $50 Amazon gift card, and the second and third place sellers on each campus will receive a $25 Amazon gift card.

The fundraiser is one of our top three fundraisers each year and is an event that includes performances by the high school and middle school jazz ensembles, a silent auction, a raffle, and a barbecue dinner.

Event tickets are $40 for individuals or $400 for a reserved table for ten. Raffle tickets are $5 each or 4 for $20 and are good for a chance to win a YETI Tundra Haul wheeled cooler that will be given away during the event. Ticket packets for high school students will include 5 event tickets to sell and 10 raffle tickets that they're encouraged to sell.  Any unsold event tickets must be returned to the band directors by February 16.  Middle school students will receive a packet with 10 raffle tickets and an order form for event tickets, with the order form and event ticket payments due back to the middle school directors on February 16. Students may request more raffle tickets from directors after selling their initial 10.    Event tickets and reserved tables (includes 10 event tickets) are available to purchase online as well at https://dsbandboosters.membershiptoolkit.com/store/5020

From Mr. Woods:

Hello Tiger Band Family,
Wow! I love it when our Tiger Band Family steps up like we did all day on Saturday for the Pageantry in the Springs TCGC contest.  The student volunteers were rock stars all day, and the parents were absolutely amazing!  Kudos to Maria Morales and the whole planning team for a really well-run event!  Preliminary figures point to having brought in more revenue yesterday than ever before for this event. But more importantly, I think, is the unsolicited feedback I've received:

This is from a Guard Director new to Texas -

"I was very nervous about it being my first time in Texas.  Your community was super helpful and supportive of me and my team, and I feel like you knocked it out of the park."

Congratulations to our JV and Varsity Winterguards for strong first performances. The JV guard rehearses once a week, and the Varsity guard rehearses twice a week. See the Announcement Sheet for dates and locations of future contest performances. You don't want to miss seeing these performers give it their all!

UIL Solo and Ensemble: Feb. 25th at Hays HS.  All WE/SB/CB students are required to perform a solo in order to be eligible to sign up for band for next year.  Any students that are ineligible must perform at the Recital Series on Monday, Feb. 27th at 5:00pm in the Orchestra Hall or at a concert.  Entry Fee for Solo is $12, Ensemble Fee is $12 for each performer.  Payment is through RevTrack Webstore at this link.  This fee is now due.

https://drippingspringsisd.revtrak.net/hs-band#/list

Accompanist Fee for UIL Solos:  The accompanist fee for a Class 2 or 3 solo is $50. The fee for a Class 1 solo is $65.  This fee includes two 15-minute rehearsals at the Band Hall plus the performance on Feb. 25.  Unfortunately, due to gas prices, the fees had to be raised.  Payment of this fee will be made directly to the Accompanist, due at the first scheduled rehearsal.  Cash or check made out to the Accompanist will be accepted. Accompanists may have Venmo or another way to pay the fee online. Rehearsals will begin the week of Feb. 13th.

President's Update

Howdy Tiger Band Families!

THANK YOU to everyone that helped make the Pageantry in the Springs TCGC contest a success. A special thank you to Maria Morales for leading the planning and to all of the adult and student volunteers that volunteered for multiple shifts to make the event happen.

The deadline to order HEB cards to use in March is coming up February 9. Please get your order in now, and if you haven't participated before, think about jumping in.  Late last year we had a month with $17,000 in card orders.  If we can grow this just a little more to reach $25,000 a month in card orders we will receive a higher percentage back from HEB. Please place your order soon!

The Evening of Jazz Fundraiser is one of our top three fundraisers each year, and is an event that includes performances by the high school and middle school jazz ensembles, a silent auction, a raffle, and a barbecue dinner.  Event tickets are $40 for individuals or $400 for a reserved table for ten. Raffle tickets are $5 each or 4 for $20 and are good for a chance to win a YETI Tundra Haul wheeled cooler that will be given away during the event. Thanks to Michael Rutherford, Kimberly Bertram, and Caryn Pacelli for the work they've put in to planning and collecting silent auction items for the event.

Ticket packets for the Evening of Jazz Fundraiser will be going home with students this week.  Thanks to Doug and Su Gibbs, Ron and Suzanne Meyer, and Michael Rutherford for helping prepare packets today after volunteering at our TCGC event yesterday!  Ticket packets for high school students will include 5 event tickets and 10 raffle tickets that they're encouraged to sell. The top raffle seller at the high school and each middle school will receive a $50 Amazon gift card, and the second and third place sellers on each campus will receive a $25 Amazon gift card.

Event tickets for the Evening of Jazz fundraiser are also available online at https://dsbandboosters.membershiptoolkit.com/store/5020

Thank you again to all that volunteered this week to make our fundraisers a success.  The money we raise allows us to support the development of our performers and the competitive shows they produce each year.

Go Tiger Band!

From Mr. Woods:

Hello Tiger Band Family,

I hope that everyone had a wonderful and safe Holiday season.  It's good to be back!  We do have some events coming up that need your assistance and participation, so please keep your eye on the calendar for those dates. Our Band Booster Board continues to work very hard to assist in providing amazing experiences for your Tiger Band students, and they need your support. Thanks!

TMEA Area Auditions: Congratulations to all our Tiger Band students that participated in the TMEA Area E auditions this past Saturday at Westlake HS.  All the auditioning students represented DSHS and the Tiger Band extremely well, and I am so proud of their incredible dedication and perseverance through this very long and arduous process. We have had some individuals in the past that chose to audition in the 6A track, but this is the first year that ALL our students were competing at the 6A level.  Some of the other schools in our area include Vista Ridge, Vandergrift, Westlake, Lake Travis, SA Reagan, SA Johnson, etc.  This is a REALLY tough Area, and our Tiger Band students really did a great job.

TCGC Winterguard/Percussion Contest: We are hosting the Jan. 28 contest here at DSHS.  This is a similar event to the Thunder in the Hills in that there will be lots of teams coming here to DSHS to compete (67 guards and 15 percussion/winds).  This will take a lot of volunteers the day of to make this contest run smoothly.  All students are expected to work at least one shift, so please plan accordingly. Adults are required for several key positions (nothing difficult, just important) so please make every effort to plan to spend at least one shift volunteering. If you have any questions, please contact Maria Salazar or Sarah Johnson.

President's Update

Howdy and Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had a peaceful holiday and time to recharge. The spring season is off to a quick start with our color guard performers in camp this week to get their winter guard show set. There are several things coming up fast for you.

Tomorrow at 6:30 in the band hall we have the monthly booster meeting. We’ll be reviewing spring event plans, so join to learn how you can help.

Tomorrow is also the deadline to order HEB cards for February. Please consider adding participating in the HEB card fundraiser to your habits this year.  Setting up a recurring monthly order makes participation a one-time event and helps the band year-round. Please see the section below for more details!

Pageantry in the Springs, our TCGC Winter Guard and Percussion contest on January 28, is less than three weeks away! Please watch for the volunteer sign up and get plugged in to help with this INDOOR fundraiser.

Save the date for An Evening of Jazz, our dinner and silent auction fundraiser on March 3 at Dripping Springs Ranch Park. Tickets will be available for students to sell soon. If your business would like to donate an item to the silent auction, please email SilentAuction@dsbandboosters.org

HEB Gift Cards Fundraiser Info

We are grateful for all of our participants in the DSBB HEB card fundraiser. In 2022, you helped the band raise over $4,000 just by shopping at HEB. Towards the end of this year, we generated one of our largest monthly orders post-COVID with a $17,000 card order. It’s so exciting that each month we consistently hover around 30 band families participating, but we know we can do more!

Please add joining this fundraiser to your 2023 to-do list! Just use the link above to place your order or send us an email with any questions. Better yet, mark your order as a recurring monthly order and help out the band all year long. Nothing will make us happier than to mail out your cards each month. We promise to make the process as seamless as possible, and you can always email if you have any questions at hebcards@gmail.com.

Happy Holidays! Laurie Darilek and Jennifer LaRochelle

President's Update

Thanks to all that volunteered this week.  Logan Lucas, Ed Muth, and Travis Wilson for providing the Band mover support needed to get our TMEA Region Band clinics and concerts and pulling trailers down I-35!  Thanks also to the students and parents that came out Saturday morning to clean the concession stands and move our equipment to storage.  You rock!

As the year winds down and we start thinking about the new year and things that we'll change, please consider adding participating in the HEB card fundraiser to your habits this year.  The fundraiser has brought in over $4,000 for the band program with just 30 families regularly participating.  If we have more families participating the percentage of the card sales the band receives increases. Setting up a recurring monthly order makes participation a one-time event and helps the band year round.  Please see the section below for more details!

Planning for Pageantry in the Springs, our TCGC Winter Guard and Percussion contest on January 28, is in full swing.  Please contact Maria Morales at fundraising@dsbandboosters.org to get plugged in to help with this INDOOR! fundraiser.

I'll see you all at the holiday concert tomorrow!

Concession Update

SAT 12/10 - LAST REQUEST FOR CONCESSIONS HELP IN 2022!

Next Saturday we will be moving out of the concessions stand and preparing for hand over to the soccer boosters for their season.   We need a group of 25 people or so to work Saturday morning to knock this out quickly.   We’ll have some volunteers that are familiar with concessions to help direct the packing and labeling of items for storage, and welcome others that are available (including hard working students) to come help.  Please sign-up so that we know that we’ll have a sufficient team to get this done.  If the spots are all filled, feel free to show up anyway!

What we’ll be doing:

  • Inventory remaining food items and determine best use (dispose, save, donate, sell to soccer group, etc.)
  • Set aside items (equipment, food, and supplies) needed for Pageantry in the Springs
  • Categorize items pack and label to easily identify for next season
  • Move-items to storage
  • Clean

A big shout-out to Brian Tuohy, and Mike, Austin and Travis Rutherford yesterday for their assistance with emptying/cleaning the fryers and power washing the cooking areas.  This is a dirty job and will make moving and cleanout much smoother this week – THANK YOU!

We’ll have our trailers in place and ready to start at 8:00.  With the right amount of help we should have this wrapped up before noon.

Thanks for everyone that has pitched in to help in concessions this season!

Kevin Smith, VP Concessions

Band Movers Update

Thank you to all of the drivers and movers this performance season and all the other volunteers who made this season extremely successful!!

The games season continues but we have less gear to move.  Driving assignments will be assigned once needs are finalized.

Thank you,

-Daniel Jennings

Percussion and Pit Crew Update

I hope everyone has enjoyed the Thanksgiving break!  It was great to see so many faces at the game on Friday.  Thanks to those that assisted with unloading trailers and getting equipment moved.

We will be supporting the band with moving equipment for the game on Friday, but again – no sign up will be posted – students will be taking care of the majority of equipment, but always welcome a few extra hands to load/unload trailers.

Thunder in the Hills

Thanks again for ALL the Student and Adult volunteers that supported this event on Saturday and especially to those that took on more shift hours to keep everything running smoothly.  If you ordered a shirt as part of the Volunteer pre-sale and you did not pick that up at check-in, those will be sent home with your student this week.  In addition, if a student did not receive their certificate for volunteer hours, Allison Muth will be getting those delivered to the Band Directors for pick-up this week as well for their record.

If you are interested in helping or have questions, please contact Mark Glass.
