From Mr. Woods:

Hello Tiger Band Family,
We did it!  BOA Austin Regional Finalists!  I'm so proud and pleased for the students, they're working really hard and I've really enjoyed all the productive rehearsals we've had the past 2 weeks or so. All the judges were in agreement that this contest was one of the hardest early season shows they've had to judge...everybody was just REALLY good.  I know the students are excited about being included in such amazing company.  Thank you to our chaperones and Pit/Band movers for getting all of our stuff there and back safely.  I'm really looking forward to adding Part 4 this week to present, at least in part, this Saturday at the Capitol City Marching Festival.
Thank you to all who helped out with MS Band Night on Friday, I think the 7th and 8th grade students from both campuses had a great time, and the HS students did a great job of welcoming and helping out their Band Buddy.
Please remember that appointments, etc. are best scheduled such that your student is able to attend all rehearsals as scheduled.  The Directors staff and techs can't help them get better if your student isn't there.  Students are required to make up rehearsal time missed (not class time), but that should not be considered a fall back to miss rehearsal when an alternative time could be scheduled.
Please do not substitute any of the required undergarment items, grey dri fit, show shirt, grey lycra shorts, long white or black socks, white or black shoes.  ALL students are expected to bring and wear these items for every performance as designated.  We had several students that didn't have grey lycra short or the correct show shirt (the lighter blue dri-fit is the student version of the show shirt).  This diminishes the look of professionalism, unity and pride that we all have for our Tiger Band program.
UIL academic eligibility check #1 is now upon us.  Students must have a 70 or above in on level classes and at least a 60 or above in Honors/AP courses as of Friday, 9/22.  Grades are due in Skyward on Tuesday evening.  Ineligibility will begin Friday, September 19 at 4:15pm.  If your student is ineligible, they must go home after school on Friday, they may not be with or travel with the band while ineligible, but they will still attend all scheduled rehearsals.  Decisions as to whether a performance spot will be available to them should the regain eligibility at the 9 weeks will be made by the Director Staff on an individual basis.
We have our 2nd contest of the season coming up this Saturday - Capital City Marching Festival held at Burger Center.  Performance time is 3:30pm. Please see the linked itinerary and performance schedules at the top of the newsletter.

President's Update

Hey Band!

Wow! What a great day yesterday! I am so proud of the hard work our students have put in, and it was amazing to have that validated with a spot in finals at BOA Austin! Thank you to all of the volunteers yesterday who made the crazy day possible!

I hope your students have had a restful day today. The crazy schedule continues!

  • Football Game - This Friday is an away game at Buda's Johnson HS. We have a few spots remaining for volunteers, including chaperoning.
  • Capital City Marching Festival - This Saturday is the Cap City Marching Festival at Burger Stadium. Please consider volunteering. We have 30 volunteers spots still open.
  • Spirit Store - The store will open tonight for one more time to order an extra show shirt or gray dri fit, as well as the gray spirit shirts again. The order will take 3-4 weeks from today for delivery so consider this when ordering. This opportunity is great for Grand Nationals. If your student only has one gray dri fit, consider ordering a second one because there is a good chance they will need to wear it two days on the trip with no easy way to wash. A separate email will be sent out when the store is open. The store will close WEDNESDAY, SEPT 27. NO LATE ORDERS will be accepted, and no extra shirts will be available for sale.

Make sure your students are staying on top of schoolwork, getting good sleep, and staying hydrated!

Go Tiger Band!

Percussion/ Pit Crew Update

Thank you to all the volunteers that showed up to assist with the Friday game performance and for our 1st BOA competition this year.  It was great to see so many of you supporting our students.  We learned a few new things from both Friday and Saturday’s competition so be aware that we will be modifying the Sing-up lists for Home games and competitions moving forward.

It will be extremely important that we have each person’s name listed in Sign-up (individually) so it is clear who will be on the field – supporting the Front Ensemble.  For props – we will create a new sign-up category so we can track those volunteers that will assist with props (especially for competition days).  The adult volunteers for props are extremely critical to assist with moving the props into “the ready” position for students to take on to the field, however, moving forward those assisting with props will not be entering the field – something we learned from this weekend’s activities.

Again – I can’t thank everyone enough for your support – it takes all of us to make these activities successful so the students and Directors remain focused on the performances.

Lastly, for those that have submitted interest in assisting in Indianapolis – I am working on reviewing all the information this week so we can finalize our list of volunteers to support Pit Crew / Prop and ensure we do not have any conflicts with travel.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me with any questions.

Thanks

Allison Muth

Volunteer Central

Our volunteers have been showing up BIG time: helping, leading, shepherding in a multitude of ways. Thank you, thank you to every one who sweated it out this weekend to support our kids! Let's keep up this great momentum, since we are just at the beginning of the competition season, and have many more exciting events ahead:

Cap City Marching Festival - Our next competition is this Saturday and we need many more helping hands with Pit Crew, Chaperones, and Color Guard Chaperones. We have also added a new role which is separate from the Pit Crew: Prop Pulling Crew. This competition will be much closer, at Burger Stadium, and hopefully a bit cooler. Fingers crossed! Please don't wait to sign up if you can help >> Marching Contest Volunteer Signup

Home Football Games/Concessions Stands - We have three more home games on the schedule and we will need a full house in both of our concessions stands. We ask that all band families commit to at least 3 concessions-related volunteer shifts to make our biggest fundraiser a success. This is a great time to plan ahead and choose which of the home games you will be working your shifts. Look for Concessions Stand - Game Night Operations and Remote Drink & Snack Stand in the sign-ups. Sign up here >>  Football Game Volunteer Signup

Uniform Update - Help Needed

Great performance at BOA Austin. You make us all proud!

Away Game against Moe & Gene Johnson Friday Night, September 22nd: Students will be wearing their Formal Uniform. They will need their grey lycra bike shorts, grey dri-fit, long black socks, and black shoes.

Capital City Marching Contest on Saturday, September 30th: Students will wear Formal Uniform with white bibbers. They will need their grey lycra bike shorts, long whitesocks, white shoes, Grey dri-fit shirt under the bibbers AND their competition shirts to change into. It is advisable that the student keeps a gym bag of some sort to put all their items in. It also helps if they mark their initials in their clothes and shoes, markers in the uniform room if requested.

Sewing Group:  We are almost finished cutting the materials and we are getting ready to serge drops and inserts. Once they are completed we will then need people to help cut snap tape, cut velcro strips, sew buttons, as well as sew everything together. We hope to start sewing by Monday, October 2nd. We do need them done and fitted by October 13th.  Come join the fun to get these made.

If you have any further questions, please contact us at: uniforms@dsbandboosters.org.

Thank you,

Chaperones Needed

Taking care of our 200 kids during contests is a big job and needs a big team! We would love to add a few parents to our group who are willing to spend the day with us. The job isn’t difficult and is mainly just meeting the needs of the kids that may come up that day. In return, you’ll get a front row seat for all of the band action, and you’ll get to know the best kids and parents you’ll ever meet. Join us!

Drop-off and Pick-up Procedures

Going forward, we ask that you follow the following procedures for drop off and pickup.

  •  Drop off for rehearsals – You may use the Driveway Loop to drop off your student, but do not stop or wait. Please pull as far forward (past the first entrance to the loading dock). Be cautious and aware that students will be pushing equipment onto the practice lot.
  • Pickup from any rehearsal or event (football games or contests) – Please park in the parking lot and have your student walk to your car. Do not pickup, stop, or wait in the Driveway Loop. Buses will need to use the Driveway Loop to drop off for events, and students need to use the ramps from the band lot into the Driveway Loop for moving equipment back to the band hall after rehearsals.
  • Drop off/Pickup for School – For before and after school at regular school start and end times (not a band rehearsal), refer to the drop off and pickup procedures that the school issues.

From Mr. Woods:
Hello Tiger Band Family,

What a great showing by all the adult and student volunteers for our 14th Thunder in the Hills Drumline contest on Saturday!  The weather wasn't as cooperative as we hoped, but everyone did an amazing job of being flexible and making all the things happen as well as hoped.  I received many compliments about our student's politeness and behavior and how well the event was organized from performing group Directors...I know how great our students are, but it's always a proud moment when other Directors get to know just how great they are, too.

First contest of the season is on Saturday (BOA contest itinerary)- and it's also the end of the 6 weeks grading period for UIL academic eligibility.  Your student must be passing at the 6 weeks and 9 weeks in order to continue to perform.  If they're not eligible at the end of the 9 weeks they will not be able to attend the BOA Indianapolis trip.  I can't stress enough how important it is for your student to remain academically eligible.

Rehearsal Schedule for this week:

Monday        7:00am - 8:20am Winds/Percussion only

6:00pm - 8:30pm Full Band

Wednesday   7:00am - 8:20am  Full Band

Thursday      7:00am - 8:20am  Full Band

Friday           7:00am - 8:20am  Full Band

This Friday is Middle School Band Night.  Band Buddies will be assigned on Monday, students should plan to present a small gift to their buddy.  We will use the same buddy pairing for the Side by Side rehearsals.  This is a major recruiting event, so please think about how to incorporate your buddy into the Tiger Band football game experience so we retain all the 8th graders into HS Band.  We will be performing our show Post-Game to prepare for the contest on Saturday.

Football Game Schedule/Home/Bowie HS/MS Band Night

4:30pm Rehearsal on Band Lot

5:00pm Eat then dress in FB Formal with no shako

8:30pm Half-time performance with MS bands (the actual time of performance is determined by game progress, could be earlier or later by 10-15 minutes)

9:00pm MS released – MS Directors will determine method of dismissal

10:15pm Game over

10:30pm Post Game performance with Props

President's Update

Hey Band!

Wow! What a great turnout for Thunder in the Hills yesterday! Thanks to everyone who came out to do a shift (or two or three)! It was a great success!

  • Football Game - Friday night is middle school night so our halftime performance will be a combined performance with the middle schools. We are still in need of 24 volunteer spots to be filled, mostly in concessions! Please sign up to help us. If you do not have a middle school student, this is a great opportunity to help out in the concession stand.
  • Bands of America Austin Regional - Saturday, September 23, at Kelly Reeves Stadium in Round Rock - This weekend is our first competition! We have several volunteer spots open, such as pit crew, chaperones, etc. Please sign up to help out! Plan to join and support the band by watching them perform at the competition. Wear your show shirt!
  • Buttons and Spirit Shirts - Monday 7:30 pm in the stadium - We will have photo buttons available for purchase for those who haven't purchased a button yet but would like one! We will also have the gray spirit wear orders to pick up if you purchased these items. These are not the informal uniform pieces or the show shirts that were recently purchased. This order has not been received yet.

Make sure your students are staying on top of schoolwork, getting good sleep, and staying hydrated!

Concessions - Volunteers Needed

Thank you to all the parents AND students that came out and pitched for concessions at TITH yesterday. In addition to surviving some much needed but ill-timed rain, this group cooked and prepared and served almost 1300 hamburgers! Your help was much appreciated!

We have a football game this Friday (9/22) and are still in need of 18 workers in concessions and 3 to operate our remote drink / snack stations. Please sign up today! These remote stations are great for families that are unable to volunteer because they have younger children that are not in high school, but are able to assist by retrieving items from coolers, etc. The stations are very important and take a significant load off the main concessions stand line during the game.

Please help fill our concessions slots! - Concessions Sign-up

Please contact Kevin Smith with any concessions related questions: concessions@dsbandboosters.org.

Percussion/ Pit Crew Update

Percussion / Pit Crew:

Thank you to those that assisted with moving equipment to support the Front Ensemble at Friday evening’s game at House Park.  This week is a home game and we may be following  different schedule since it is Middle School night, so please read the entire newsletter so you are available at the times when the  performance occurs.

Lastly, a big shout out to everyone that supported the Thunder in the Hills event.  There are a few student volunteer certificates that I will be sending to school on Monday (primarily Percussion), so please have your students reach out to me if they did not get their certificate at percussion@dsbandboosters.org.

Thanks

We're blown away with how our students showed up in their volunteer roles yesterday at TITH. They braved torrential rains, big crowds and represented Tiger Band in the best way possible. Be so very proud of your kids! And SO many of you adult volunteers came together and worked your tiger tails off to make the day a big success. Thank you, thank you to ALL of you!

Home Football Game this Friday, 9/22 - We are short more than half of the folks we need to successfully run the concessions stands. 22 more folks needed! This is by far our biggest fundraiser and we rely on our band families to make it happen. Look for Concessions Stand - Game Night Operations and Remote Drink & Snack Stand in the sign-ups. We also have a few other volunteer needs throughout the evening. Sign up here >>  https://signup.com/go/qXHAYBW

Marching Contests - The band has their first competition this Saturday: BOA Austin! We still need a variety of volunteers to participate in various roles and support our band. As of right now, we only have half of the folks we need for Pit Crew. Don't feel intimidated if you have never served in this role before - you will be assigned to push a prop, speaker or instrument and will be given very specific instructions. If you do sign up, be sure to block off the whole day since our band has a good chance of performing in the evening finals. Sign up here >> https://signup.com/go/ OjQEGJi

Uniform Update - Help Needed

Home Game against Bowie Friday Night, September 22nd: Students will be required to wear Formal Uniform. They will need their grey lycra bike shorts, grey dri-fit, long black socks, and black shoes.

BOA Austin Competition on Saturday, September 23rd: Students will wear Formal Uniform with white bibbers for their first competition. They will need their grey lycra bike shorts, long white socks, white shoes, Grey dri-fit shirt under the bibbers ANDtheir competition shirts to change into. It is advisable that the student keeps all of their items in a gym bag of some sort and it helps if they are marked with your student's initials.

Sewing Group:  The material has finally arrived and we will start cutting this week. We hope to start sewing all of the pieces after the BOA Austin competition so that we have them done and fitted by October 13th. There are many jobs (not just sewing) to get these finished. If you can cut material, sew a button, iron or use a basic sewing machine or serger, we are in need of your help to start sewing these inserts and drops.  Come join the fun to get these made.

Thank you to all of the parents who signed up to be a Kubby Keeper for the school year. Your help makes a big difference to all of our band student's every week.

From Mr. Woods:

Hello Tiger Band Family,

I hope you've enjoyed our football bye weekend and got some great rest for you and your band student.  The next 3 weekends are going to be fun and full!  Thunder in the Hills on Saturday, 9/16, our first 2 contests on 9/23 and 9/30.  TITH and contest days are long, exciting, fun, and tiring - but most of all they're an opportunity to show off our community and our amazing Tiger Band students and parents to the marching band community at large.  While there will be inconveniences to bear and sacrifices to make, I can promise you that some of the very best experiences and memories you and your student will have will be on these long days.

I am always thrilled when I hear students say that they surprised themselves at how well they fare on contest days, and how proud of themselves they are.  Being proactive and making sure that good rest, good eating habits and making smart choices with free time (ie keeping up with school work) will help to ensure the very best experience possible.  All of the Tiger Band students of the past have not only survived these marathon days, but are thriving today because of the perseverance and follow through they learned from contest days.   I'm excited for your student to have the same kind of positive experience, regardless of the competitive outcome.

Thunder in the Hills - Almost Here!

Hey Band!

Thunder in the Hills (TITH) is rapidly approaching! It is September 16th and we have a record 35 bands participating this year which means, once again, we will need all hands on deck. There are many different volunteer opportunities so sign up quick to get your favorite spot!

Each year, we sell a t-shirt at the event. The students love to have these to wear throughout the year. They are currently available for pre-order on the spirit store. If you purchase in advance, it will be available at volunteer check-in for the event. Parents are also welcome and encouraged to buy one and wear as a volunteer for the event.

If you have never experienced TITH, you don't want to miss it! It is so much fun watching all of the incredibly talented percussionists, including our favorite- our Tiger Band percussionists performing at 6:15PM.

Thank you for all of your support! I hope everyone gets the chance to be a part of this fun day!

Uniform Update - Help Needed

Away Game against Austin Friday Night, September 15th: Students will be required to wear Formal Uniform for the first time. They will need their grey lycra bike shorts, grey dri-fit, long black socks, and black shoes. It is advisable that the student keep all of their items in a gym bag of some sort.

Volunteers for Kubby Keepers needed:  Our first game to wear the formal uniform is September 15th. Thank you to the people who have signed up so far, but we still need 3 more Kubby Keepers to help keep our uniforms fresh and clean. This volunteer job is perfect for any parents who can't help during other events, but can come after a game or competition and take home ten sets of bibbers and jackets to clean and get them back into their cubby by a set time of day. It is basically only two extra loads to wash each week. A bonus is if your student drives themselves to and from school, they can pick up your set and bring them back for you. This volunteer position lasts for the entire school year as we wash through UIL Sight Reading and Spring Concert season.  If interested please contact us with your email and cell phone number at uniforms@dsbandboosters.org.

Sewing Group:  We need to make 200 sets of drops and inserts by October 14th. There are many jobs (not just sewing) to get these finished. If you can cut material, sew a button, iron or use a basic sewing machine or serger, we are in need of your help to start sewing these inserts and drops. We are still awaiting delivery of material, but once it shows up and the material cut, we will be all hands on deck to get these finished. Come join the fun to get these made.

If you have any further questions, please contact us at: uniforms@dsbandboosters.org.

Thank you,

Su Gibbs and Suzanne Gusella

  • Pickup from any rehearsal or event (football games or contests) – Please park in the parking lot and have your student walk to your car. Do not pickup, stop, or wait in the Driveway Loop. Buses will need to use the Driveway Loop to drop off for events, and students need to use the ramps from the band lot into the Driveway Loop for moving equipment back to the band hall after rehearsals.
  • Drop off/Pickup for School – For before and after school at regular school start and end times (not a band rehearsal), refer to the drop off and pickup procedures that the school issues.

President's Update

Hey Band!

I hope you are all having a good Labor Day Weekend! Enjoy the day off! Thanks to everyone who volunteered on Friday for the Away Game!

Please note this week’s practice schedule. Due to the holiday, there will be a rehearsal Tuesday night and then again Wednesday morning. We do not have a game this weekend so enjoy the last weekend off!

Wow! What a great first March-a-thon! Because of all of the generous donors, the band raised over $50,000!! Be sure to extend our thanks to all of your friends and family that donated. Thank you to all of our band families that donated as well!

If you have not registered with DSISD’s Inspiring Volunteers, please do so as soon as you can. It only takes a few minutes, and everyone who volunteers is required to complete a background check.

Please note the volunteer opportunities coming up. Thunder in the Hills is coming up on September 16. This is a big fundraiser for Tiger Band. We have 35 percussion units coming from all over the state. We need lots of help from both students and parents. Students will have a meeting and sign up separately from adults at that time.

Go Tiger Band!

Caryn Pacelli

president@dsbandboosters.org

Band Volunteer? DSISD Registration is Required

As a reminder, all band volunteers need to be registered as a DSISD volunteer with a completed background check on file. This is the same process to register as a classroom volunteer. You are required to register or update your registration every 12 months.

To register with DSISD as a volunteer or to check and see if you're registration is up-to-date, click here: DSISD Volunteer Registration

Hat Creek - Sept. 10 - Band Spirit Night
Next Sunday Night is Tiger Band Night at Hat Creek Burgers! On Sunday night, September 10th, from 5-9 pm, grab dinner at Hat Creek Burgers, put your receipt in the Spirit Night Bucket, and Hat Creek will donate 10% of your total right back to the Band Boosters!

You have to eat dinner anyway, right?

Percussion/ Pit Crew Update

Percussion / Pit Crew:

Thanks again for all the adult volunteers that assisted with unloading and moving equipment for Friday’s game.  As you see, it takes even more hands to make away games successful and to reduce the stress of our students – especially with only 15 minutes to prep before their performance.  I think that was a record!

Please continue to sign up early – it truly helps to ensure that we have all spots covered and we will continue to increase the number of volunteers needed as we begin to introduce the props.  There is no game this week so please utilize this time to review the upcoming volunteer activities and sign up.  We will especially need everyone to participate in the Thunder in the Hills event on September 16th.   This is a great event that we host and we will need everyone’s help to make that day a success.

Lastly – for those parents that reached out for Parent Percussion shirt orders – I expect to have those within the next 7-10 days and will reach out once they arrive.

Thank you all for your continued support.

Go Tiger Band!

March-a-Thon Success

Our first annual Tiger Band March-a-thon was a huge success!  We wrapped up our fundraising at just over $50,000.  It was truly a team effort.  There were some large donations, which of course we all appreciate, but in large part, it was obvious that many small donations added up to the big total that we needed for Indianapolis.

Every student who met their $300 goal will get another night at Epic Fun courtesy of our Band Boosters!  Stay tuned for a final date soon, but expect a weekend in early December, when our kids’ schedules and stress levels are a little lighter.  It’ll be a great way to celebrate the end of a great marching season!

The fundraiser says “closed” on the Givebutter site, but it should still be accepting donations for the next week or so.  Feel free to have your student keep working on that $300 goal in the meantime!

If you loved March-a-thon as much as I did (I *really* loved it), let me know if you want to be on next year’s planning team. It’ll be fun, I promise!

As always, please feel free to email me with any questions or feedback!

Please contact Kimberly Bertram at fundraising@dsbandboosters.org with any questions.

Percussion/ Pit Crew Update

Percussion/Pit Crew:

THANK YOU to everyone that assisted with Pit Crew on Friday night.  It was our 1st home game and we appreciated everyone’s help.  This week, we will have our 1st away game and the duties to assist with Pit Crew are a bit more:

  • Assist with pushing to practice warm-up area from trailer
  • Push equipment on the field for the half time performance
  • Push equipment to the trailer after performance

Please be sure to sign up early this week so we make sure we have enough adults to support the movement of the equipment.

Percussion Shirts – I will be placing an order for any parent or additional student percussion shirts by end of day Tuesday 8/29.  Please send me an email if you are interested.  For those that have already responded, I will send you a final confirmation on Monday to confirm shirt size and shirt design.

See you Friday.

Fundraising Update

Thank you to everyone who helped make our very first March-a-thon a huge success!  We could not have done that event without the huge parent volunteer presence we had.  Also, thank you to the Belterra HOA for hosting us and for providing Kona Ice for all of our band kids.

All of my best planning couldn’t fix the heat that morning, but our kids handled it like pros!

Our Belterra neighbors donated over $2000 to our March to Indianapolis fund, and I expect that number to keeping creeping up.  Not only that, but the community PR and band recruiting we did that morning were priceless.

Our Givebutter March-a-thon website will remain open until the evening of Friday, September 1st, so keep those donations coming!  We will announce prizes this week, but assume it will be based on kids meeting their $300 individual goal.

If your child helped pass out door hangers last weekend and would like service hour credit, please email me by Monday night so I can get the certificates done.

Please contact Kimberly Bertram at fundraising@dsbandboosters.org with any questions.

President's Update

Hey Band!

I hope you were able to come watch the students perform last night! They did an amazing job. I have a few reminders. Be sure, as always, to read all of the newsletter.

  • Purchasing BOA Tickets for the Indianapolis trip - Be on the lookout tomorrow for an email with details on how to purchase a ticket in the band block (deadline will be Tuesday midday).
  • First Football Game – August 25 at Tiger Stadium. We will need lots of help to run the concession stand and get the band on and off the field for their first football performance. Please check the signup list to volunteer. Volunteers who sign up by Wednesday will be able to get into the game for free.
  • March-a-Thon – Saturday, August 26. We have raised over $30,000 so far. That's halfway to our $60,000 goal. We want lots of support in Belterra along the route to make this a super successful event so please come out next Saturday!
  • Spirit Store - The spirit store will be open until Saturday, August 26. You can purchase a spirit shirt, an extra show shirt (if you didn't purchase one at registration), some extra informal pieces, or a Thunder in the Hills tshirt (theses will also be sold at the event). The link to the spirit store is at the top of this page.

Percussion/ Pit Crew Update

Percussion/ Pit Crew:

Looking forward to our 1st football game and we only have a few spots left to fill to support the movement of the Pit Crew and Props during the Friday game.  For everyone that is signed up by Wednesday – here are a few reminders:

  • All names listed in Sign-UP by Wednesday, will be submitted to DSHS and placed on a list for access into the game for free
  • Check in for the game will be at the volunteer check in to receive a wrist band to gain access into the game – Check-in will be located behind the home concession stand.  Only those names on the Sign up list will receive a wrist band – all others will need to purchase a ticket.
  • We will meet during 2nd quarter where you will be given equipment assignments
  • We will assist with moving equipment to the field for half time and then stay on the field for the performance  Once the performance is over we will push the equipment to the band hall.
  • The props will also be removed from the field after the performance and loaded in the truck and/or taken back to the band hall (still working thru this)

In addition, I will also put together a Pit Crew – GroupMe App list which allows me to push out notifications about meeting locations, and any changes.  Be on the look out for an invite this week.

Finally for all the percussion parents – let me know if you are interested in purchasing an additional “percussion – parent” t-shirt.  We can customize the text on the shirt based on your preference and I would like to get an order placed this week – it takes about 1 week to make.  This is another great way to show your DSHS Band spirit and support your students.  Cost of the shirt is $20 / each.  I will send Venmo information regarding payment once you let me know your are interested.  Emails can be sent to percussion@dsbandboosters.org.

Do no hesitate to reach out via email or text (713.256.3028)m

See you Friday.

First Annual DS Band March-a-thon! This Saturday - It's finally here!

The donation drive portion of the 2023 Marchathon is well underway.  I know there have been some bumps in the road; thanks for your patience. If you or your student is still having trouble setting up their account, please don't hesitate to ask.

We are finally almost ready for the marching part of Marchathon!  For students -- please see Mr. Woods's detailed instructions on call times, uniforms, etc. for Saturday.

For parents -- we need you!  I just added some new volunteer slots that are super important for our kids safety and to keep the event running smoothly: https://signup.com/go/VLbdQxo

If the signup is full, please come out and support the band!  Follow along with us, or set up along the route and cheer.  Bring your friends and family, and set the tone for our kids and for the  neighborhood that this is FUN!

Please contact Kimberly Bertram at fundraising@dsbandboosters.org with any questions.

Concessions - Help Needed

Concessions season is off to a roaring start. Thank you to all the volunteers at the Varsity Scrimmage Game on Friday, Feeding the Band event before Drill Frenzy on Saturday, and Luke Hassel and the cooking team for hosting Cooking School on Saturday.

As mentioned at the Parent Meeting, please plan to participate in at least 2 shifts in the concessions stand during the season. This will allow us to continue our tradition of providing a quality experience drawing crowds to the stadium. If you plan to help out, ensure you use Sign-Up so we have an accurate count of volunteers and how to ensure all positions are covered. See link below for volunteer opportunities. We can’t do this without your help!

https://signup.com/group/656985444317352054

URGENT NEED - Friday Early Prep Coordinator (lead position). No experience required. Provides consistent leadership to the Friday prep volunteers preparing for home games. Contact Kevin Smith at concessions@dsbandboosters.org to volunteer or with any questions.

Concessions Events in August:

8/24 - Thursday Prep (6:00-8:00) We will operate out of the visitor’s side to prep for Friday’s home opener.

8/25 - Home Football Game (various shifts) Our home opener football game against Vandergrift is expected to be a sell-out. We will be operating both home and visitor side concession stands, remote stations, and catering. We need to ensure we have all positions filled for concessions as it is too late to outsource for assistance.

Go Tiger Band!

Uniform Update

Home Game against Vandegrift Friday Night, August 25th: Students will be required to wear their Informal Uniform of black shorts, grey polo (tucked in), black belt, no-show black socks, black shoes and band cap. If items do not show up this week the uniform will be at the discretion of Mr. Woods.

Volunteers for Kubby Keepers needed:  We are in need of 8 more Kubby Keepers to help the uniform team keep our uniforms clean and tidy. This is a perfect volunteer job for working parents who can't help during events, but can come after a game or competition and take home ten sets of bibbers and jackets to clean and get them back into their cubby by a set date. They are basically washed inside out on cold, tumble dry low and rehung. You can wash the bibbers in one load and the jackets in another. Another bonus is if your student drives themselves to and from school, they can pick up your set and bring them back for you. This is a volunteer position for the entire school year as we also wash through spring concert season.  If interested please contact us at uniforms@dsbandboosters.org.

Sewing Group:  We have 200 sets of drops and inserts that will need to be made for our first competition. We have many jobs, not just sewing. If you can cut material, sew on a button, iron or use a basic sewing machine, we are in need of help to start sewing the inserts and drops before the end of September. We are still awaiting delivery of material, but once it shows up we will be all hands on deck to get these finished. Come join the fun to get these made.

If you have any further questions, please contact us at: uniforms@dsbandboosters.org.

Thank you,

Su Gibbs and Suzanne Gusella

Tiger Band March-a-Thon: Our first March-a-Thon fundraiser will take place on Saturday, August 26th in Belterra.  The route we'll be following will be about a mile long, starting at Rooster Springs Elementary (RSE) and ending at the Belterra Community Center.   Students will meet/get dropped off at RSE with their instruments.  Dress will be in support of a theme determined by the Band Council

Colorguard Sectionals: Colorguard will NOT rehearse on Monday mornings, but will have a sectional on Tuesday afternoons. See Weekly Rehearsal Schedule in Newsletter for more details. The first occurence will be August 15th/4:30-6:00pm

BOA Grand Nationals trip to Indianapolis:  For those planning to meet us in Indianapolis, our Prelims Performance Time is Friday, 11/10 at 8:15am.  The deadline to register for this trip has passed, please keep current on your payments so your student isn't dropped from the trip.

Required Parent Meeting: 6:30pm in the DSHS Auditorium.  Please join Mr. Woods and Caryn Pacelli, Band Booster President, for a required parent meeting prior to the Tiger Band Preview.  This is an opportunity to talk through details of the Indianapolis trip, needs for parent support throughout the season at football games, contests, performances, fundraisers, etc.

Dropping off and Picking up your student at the HS:  When dropping off or picking up your student, please follow the rules below. Before and after rehearsals or events, it is important that the driveway loop and the loading dock stay clear so that students can safely get set up and torn down with their equipment.

DO pull as far around the loop as you can

DO park in C lot to wait for your student

Do NOT pull into the loading dock area

Do NOT block the loading dock or staff parking entrances

Do NOT wait, sit or park in the driveway loop.  Our school buses and charter buses must be able to safely stage for student loading and unloading in that area

Tips for safe and enjoyable rehearsals: Now that Summer Band is over and school is beginning, students will have different responsibilities and classes pulling their focus.  While rehearsals won't be as long, these tips are still good practices to follow

- Get enough sleep! Plan your day to allow time for homework (in other words don't wait till 10pm to start!)

- Eat breakfast everyday - stay away from Dairy products

- WEAR A HAT - even if you "don't like hats"

- Get outside for more than 15 minutes at a time before rehearsals start to acclimate to the heat!

- Hydrate before rehearsals begin, and make sure you bring your water jug with Tiger Band Koozie filled with water (not sports drinks or tea).   We will have the water cow available for evening rehearsals, but not in the mornings.  Be sure to bring your clean water jug already filled to rehearsals.

- Apply sunscreen liberally!

- No jeans or jean shorts.  Athletic wear and tennis shoes with good support are expected.  No Hi Tops or boots permitted.

Tardy to or Absence from regularly scheduled rehearsals/events is sometimes unavoidable.  Students will make up the time missed, regardless of the reason.  Parent communication to Mr. Woods via email in addition to student communication with their section leader is required prior to the absence.  This is especially important for morning rehearsals - I need to be able to confirm that your student is safe and where they're expected to be.

First Annual DS Band March-a-thon! - What We Need from You

The first annual March-a-Thon (August 26) is almost here!!  This event is critically important to help fund our trip to Grand Nationals, and we also hope it's a lot of fun.  We need THREE things from you guys:

1) Donation Drive: The donation drive kicks off this Monday, August 14th.  Kimberly Bertram will be meeting with all of the students during their rehearsal time to walk them through the online donation platform we'll be using.  Please send your student with the name and contact information (email or cell phone) for at least 10 potential donors.  Don't worry -- we won't be making phone calls this year, just texts or emails (as you and your student prefer).  There will be prizes for the section with the most donor outreach, and the most donations (per capita)!

Note: Students will need either their phone or a computer for the meeting on Monday with access to a web browser

2) Canvassing Belterra: Parents and students, please meet us on Sunday evening, August 20th, at 6:00 pm at the Belterra Recreation Center (the one with the pool!).  We'll be canvassing Belterra with door hangers telling them about the August 26th parade and our donation drive.  It'll be quick and easy -- you'll just pick up a packet with your door hangers and assigned street name, and you'll be on your way to cover your street.   You don't even have to actually knock on the doors.  With enough help, the entire neighborhood will know we're coming in short order.

3) Volunteering at the March-a-thon: We'll need parent help at the March-a-thon event on Saturday, August 26th.  You can sign up right here: March-a-thon volunteer

Please let us know if you've got questions! Email Kimberly at fundraising@dsbandboosters.org

Drop-off and Pick-up Procedures

Going forward, we ask that you follow the following procedures for drop off and pickup. Please see the attached picture.

Topics will include; equipment set-up, safety, volume, game night schedule, and fish prep (including breading and tasting!!) >> https://signup.com/go/gOvBPLp

Needed: Friday Early Prep Coordinator:  The Concessions Team still needs one (1) volunteer lead position for a Friday Early Prep Coordinator as we gear up for our first game.

No experience is necessary, but we need a volunteer that is willing to provide consistent leadership to the Friday prep volunteers that get the concessions stands ready for home games. If you are willing to volunteer, have questions, or would like to discuss position details, please e-mail Kevin Smith at concessions@dsbandboosters.org.

Uniform Update

Shoes have arrived and were handed out on Friday. If your student was fitted during band camp then their shoes have come in. Many students who didn't pick theirs up will have to get them on Monday before practice. Please have your student try them on a rug and to make sure of their fit. If there is a problem they need to come back in the original packaging to the uniform room and we'll see about a loaner pair until they can be reordered. If the shoes get dirty or marked up we cannot return them...they are yours and you will have to buy a new pair(s). If they fit please put your student's initials under the tongue or on the inside edge of the shoe for easy identification. We have silver markers in the uniform room to borrow if needed.

Items you are required to buy: The following is a list of necessary items that students need to wear with/under Informal, Football, Concert and Competition uniforms:

  • White T-shirt (plain cotton (no logos) or the old DSHS dri-fit) for Monday night practices. Sectional shirts are optional if they have them.
  • Lycra bike shorts - Light grey to heather grey are to be worn under both black and white bibbers (white and black shorts show through the bibbers and the bibbers tend to chafe).
  • Black belt with regular size belt buckle, no rodeo buckles.
  • Long black socks - no crew socks (should go up the calf)
  • Long white socks - no crew socks and no logos, stripes or patches on heels as they can be seen through the white pants.
  • No-show black socks - nothing should be seen over the top edge of the shoe.

Picture Night Monday, August 14th: All students will be in their Formal Marching uniform for the Annual and Program pictures. Students will need their grey lycra shorts, grey dri-fit shirt (white t-shirt if they haven't received their dri-fit yet), long black socks and black shoes. Mr. Woods will inform students of hairstyle requirements.

Drill Frenzy Saturday Night, August 19th: Students will be required to wear their Informal Uniform of black shorts, grey polo, black belt, no-show socks, black shoes and band cap. Hairstyle requirements at the  discretion of Mr. Woods.

If you have any further questions, please contact us at: uniforms@dsbandboosters.org.

From Mr. Woods:

Hello Tiger Band Family,

Our summer band rehearsals and activities have gotten off to a REALLY good start.  The Colorguard and Percussion sections kicked off the 2023 season with very productive camps.  We welcomed our new Colorguard Director, Mr. Derek Vereen, to the Tiger Band Family, and he's fitting in perfectly. On Saturday, July 22nd, Mr. Ehlers and the Tiger Percussion Section presented a very successful and well-attended clinic at the Texas Bandmaster Association Convention in San Antonio.  Later that same day, over 130 Tiger Band students and parents attended the Drum Corps International Southwestern Regional Championships at the Alamodome. Over 25 performances were enjoyed by those in attendance, including our very own Eric Brown in Genesis, and Danny Nolan, Quentin Dollard, Mickey Cost and Eli Bibeau in Crossmen.  Way to go Tigers!

There is LOTS of information about upcoming events on the Announcement Sheet, please be sure to check that out to stay in the know.

Thank you to all our parent volunteers that have done an amazing job with Band Registration and helping out during summer band rehearsals so far.  Your efforts are VERY much appreciated by the students and the band staff!

BOA Grand Nationals trip to Indianapolis: The deadline to register for this trip is fast approaching.  All students and any parents going on the trip must be signed up by August 9th.  If you've already signed up, that's great!  Please be sure to keep up with your payment schedule through the TMF payment portal.  These are NOT automatic payments, you will have to go to the portal and pay each time.  It is possible to pay more than what is due, but if you get more than 2 payments behind TMF will drop your account from the trip.  You can get reinstated without another deposit fee, but will have the pay the balance due at the time of reregistration.  Any questions, please contact keith@tmftoursandtravel.com

Dropping off and Picking up your student at the HS

When dropping off or picking up your student, please follow the rules below.

Tips for safe and enjoyable rehearsals:

- Eat breakfast everyday - stay away from Dairy products

- WEAR A HAT - even if you "don't like hats"

- Get outside for more than 15 minutes at a time before rehearsals start to acclimate to the heat!

- Hydrate before rehearsals begin, and make sure you bring your water jug with Tiger Band Coozie filled with water (not sports drinks or tea).  We will have the Water Cow available for refills, but start the day with a full, fresh, water jug.

President's Update

Hey Band!

Welcome to all new families, and welcome back to returning families! I hope your kids had a great first week of full band camp! I'm proud of the great job they do to show up and work hard! We have some important things coming up in the next few weeks, and then fall marching season officially kicks off with football games and contests! Please be sure to read all of the newsletter each week. It contains very important information. It's extremely important to read the announcement sheet created by Mr. Woods. You can find it in the Important Links and Information Section above.

Uniform fittings for formal uniforms are being done during band rehearsals, starting with seniors and working down to freshmen. All students will be fitted before school starts.

The students did an amazing job last week in the heat! Be sure they stay hydrated and eat a healthy, non-dairy breakfast each day!

I hope to see you all on Friday night!

Go Tiger Band!

Tiger Band Social at Blazer Tag! This Friday, August 4 from 8-11 pm!

This year's band social will be at Blazer Tag lasertag arena on Friday, August 4th, from 8-11 pm. Join your band family to celebrate the end of those long band camp days and the beginning of what promises to be an amazing season! We have rented out the whole place so it will be an exciting time for the students to hang out with their friends and for parents to meet other band parents!

Your Band Boosters are providing desserts, drinks, and unlimited lasertag. If you'd like to play arcade games or purchase food from the Blazer Tag kitchen, please bring money!  The entire family is welcome (and encouraged!).

Blazer Tag is located at 1701 W Ben White Blvd, August, TX 78704.

First Annual DS Band March-a-thon! August 26!

Save the Date! The first annual Tiger Band March-a-Thon fundraiser is coming up!  We'll kick off the fundraising drive on August 14th and culminate on Saturday, August 26th, with a mile and a half march through Belterra, including concerts on the route and at the amenity center.  We'll need parents to help the week of the 14th canvassing Belterra with door-hangers and also help on the morning of the event -- stay tuned for signups next week!

Contact Kimberly at fundraising@dsbandboosters.org with any questions.

Concession Clean-Up This Saturday, Aug 5, at 8 am!

The band runs the concession stand for home football games. This is our biggest fundraiser, allowing the band to have the amazing program that we are all privileged to be in! In order to have a successful concession stand, we need help from all of our parents (at least 2 Friday night shifts per family). In the coming days, we will let you know how you can help out! This week, however, we need help getting the concession stand ready for the season. If you are available to help out, please sign up at signup.com at the Volunteers link under Important Links above.

Contact Kevin Smith at concessions@dsbandboosters.org with any questions.

DSISD Inspiring Volunteers - Registration Needed for All Parents!

All Volunteers for the band in any capacity (chaperone, concession stand, pit crew, etc.) must register with the district as a volunteer. We are asking that all parents register! If you have not registered before, it is a simple process. If you have, you can log in and see if you are current. You will receive an email when you need to update your information.

HEB Gift Cards Fundraiser Info

DSHS Band sells HEB gift cards, and HEB donates a percentage (3-5%) back to the band! You can use the gift cards for purchases at HEB and Central Market, as well as the gas station (no skimming of your card this way). You are also able to use it on curbside orders.

This is an easy way to give money back to the band because you are able to use the entire amount you purchase! Please consider setting up a recurrent order for HEB gift cards. It's simple to set up! Have your bank send a check each month to the P.O. Box, and you will receive a gift card in the mail. If every family in band would purchase just $200 a month (I know we all spend way more than that), the band would receive close to $20,000 each year.

ATTENTION COLOR GUARD AND PERCUSSION

As we head into the weekend, I just wanted to remind our Color-Guard & Percussion families that we need several more volunteers for next week’s camp. This is a great way to see your student in action and the volunteer needs are simple:
🍔 Meals - super easy! The orders have all been placed and paid for. All you have to do is pick up, take the food to the band hall and help serve. Easy & fun! You’ll receive instructions on where to pick up.
🎒Medical Bag- also easy! Hang out with our 2023 Color Guard kids, watch them and tend to any medical needs(band aids, ice packs, etc).
Here is the link to sign-up: https://signup.com/go/QSijVTv
Comment below with questions!

Be sure your student is preparing for the heat during summer band. Let's aim for no customers at the med tent!
Students need to do some form of exercise outside in the heat every day from NOW until Summer Band Starts. Drink water. Go for a Walk. Ride a Bike.

FYI - please stay current on your TMF BOA trip payments. After 2 late payments you will be dropped from the trip. You can sign up again without having to pay the deposit, but will have to pay the balance due at that time. This is a recent policy brought to my attention.

President's Update

Howdy Tiger Band Families!

As we head in to the last week of school, I’m sending my final message as band booster president.  It has been great to work with you all over the past two years to plan and grow our fundraisers and help ensure each of the activities we support. For those that were at the parent social yesterday you know that’s a long list of activities and they’re successful because of each and every one of you giving your time and energy to support the band program. A special thank you to Leischen Hunsicker, Gina Bisett, Shannon MacAlpine, Mark Glass, and Caryn Pacelli that as the booster Secretary, Treasurer, or VP Operations kept me on track and made sure nothing was missed.

There will be a band booster meeting including all new VPs and event leads on June 1 at 6:30pm in the band hall. There’s a lot happening behind the scenes planning registration, summer band, and Thunder in the Hills in June and July.  Please keep an eye out for planning meetings and calls for volunteers for these events so we start the next season strong!

My youngest kid will be a Junior in the Tiger Band next year, so I’ll see you in the concession stand, contest parking lots, and volunteering at our other events!

Go Tiger Band!

Timmie Smith

Concession Volunteers Needed for Graduation

We need an adult and 2-3 students (excluding Wind Ensemble) wanting volunteer hours to help sell water bottles at graduation this Friday, 5/26. Please contact president@dsbandboosters.org if you are able to help.

HEB Gift Cards Fundraiser Info

Good news- we made it back to $10,000 sales = $300 profit last month.

Not so good news- Pre-Covid days we had

~$25,000 in sales= ~$1000 profit per month.

Back to more good news-  Mr. Woods just reported our band has grown to 215 students so this will make it much easier to reach and surpass sales of $25,000.

PLEASE do your part and start getting a gift card every month to use at HEB instead of your credit card.  If you’re going to spend money at HEB, you might as well help your children’s band program while spending.  HEB generously gives back 3-5% back to our band!!!  It’s money waiting to be given to our very hard working and dedicated band students’ program.

Summer Registration and Donating Items

Mr. Woods has confirmed that the band's grey polos, grey dri-fit shirts, and black shorts will be the same style for next fall. If it doesn't fit, consider donating band uniform items back to the band hall and order a bigger size at registration. Donations are always accepted, but please do not send used gloves, socks, or old show shirts. Donations can be placed in a box/bag and either handed to a director or placed by the uniform door (not by the Lost & Found).

  • grey or white dri-fit shirts (DSHS logos & no stains)
  • shoes (black and white)
  • black shorts
  • black belts
  • black DSHS band hats
